As much as I may enjoy movies of this genre, I do not relate to, or otherwise, like to associate myself with gangsters. I personally know, and am otherwise in knowledge of, modern day equivalants and I think they are horrible, terrible people.

I'm not bagging on your post by any means; I guess it's my own problem that I can no longer find the "romance" in organized crime. [huh]

So in years to come, some folk might find it romantic to see themselves as Paul Pot/Khymer Rouge; IRA/UDA murderers; Saddam; Eichmann; Rwandan warlords; Serbian/Bosnian/Kosovan killers and extortioners; Mafioso hitmen; LA Gangsta;??? ..etc, etc.
Sadly, some don't wait. Let's not forget the current fashion for Che T-shirts. And, however strange, this isn't just us: a peep through popular literature of most centuries will reveal a fascination--all too frequently admiring--of various contemporary criminals. Distance PHYSICALLY might be more important than distance CHRONICALLY  It's vaguely exciting to read about a bank job....in the next town over.

Why do we tend to romanticize criminals??? I think it's just the suits the criminals from our favorite bygone era wore. A criminal is a criminal though, no matter what time they live in or what clothes they may wear,....

Yet we don't tend to romanticize white collar criminals ... with the exception of (the fictional) Gordon Gekko: http://iskwew.com/Bloggbilder/Gekko/fictional_gekko.jpg

True, but it's the bad guy emulation that really irks me.

Well, Marc, (maybe it's the Catholic in me...) but here, as always...it's the motivation that's important, in my opinion.

To me, there's a big, big difference to me between reenacting a Confederate soldier (or an SS man) because you want people to understand the totality of the historical experience...and doing it because you actually believe in slavery, or the master-race...or that you "merely" get off on it...

Sorry, I don't buy the argument that german reenactors or confederate reenactors, much as they hate it, feel the need to portray them for historic accuracy.

The confederates probably do it because they were underdogs and because most reenactors are southern and find something worthwhile in states rights, etc, if not slavery. And I strongly suspect the german reencators like the cool uniforms.

As for this thread, I wish those who were not interested would just keep it to themselves and let those who are have their fun. You don't have to make every opinion you have heard. Too many threads are ruined by the "I disagree" and the "not me" crowd.

Trust me, you don't want to hear every opinion I have on many threads.

I see your point. In the case of this thread, however, the dissenting began at the very beginning --with the 5th post!-- and has hardly let up since then. In short, it has turned out to be the thread.

It seems that most of us wouldn't want to be historical gangsters, and we wish to explain why not.

lol o man do we have to get all PC in this thread too? im aware that these guys werent exactly the nicest guys but it was just a "what if" kind of thing. in reality i dont condone and dont look up to this kind of evil or evil of any kind in general. i just find thier history interestin to see how one human being can munipulate so many individuals under them when everyone has the power to be thier own person and fight back and its interestin how they were able to munipulate so many parts of society just cause they had money but then again unfortunetley in this world money is power just look at the kinds of evils that get let go. but instead people did it and do it out of fear or whatever reason to this day... this kind of control has been goin on in all forms not just criminals over history.

with all due respect if any member on this forum got offeded with this topic, i directed it to the members that wouldnt have a problem with the question i asked. its like when people make threads about religion and someone gets offended over the thread because maybe they dont believe in that religion or what have you, and still go in anyway just to stir things up. ill never understand why someone would go into a thread about a topic they dont believe or agree with if the topic is not personally directed right to them.

to all those of you that answered this topic thank you for all your replies.

I wonder: do you have any experience reenacting? Mind you, there's not a group of humans on the face of the planet that doesn't include quite a variety of members...but you'll have to take my word for it: there are such people. And, no: I was a Federal reenactor and have never done WWII. Just in case you're wondering

I therefore find it somewhat interesting that your first contribution to this one was not to speak to the original point of the thread, but to offer an opinion regarding those who were. [huh]
