São Paulo downtown got a sad, violent decadence in 70s and 80s. Now it's getting up again.

Funny that this decadance saved a lot of old buildings from XIXth centrury and from 10s to 50s. Because the place had no value, it would be bad business to take them out to construct new ones. So that new, ugly buildings, all of glass and no windows, won't be here!!!

E certo. I saw those old buildings, as well as the old municipal train station in 2010. If I recall correctly, many of them are in the supposedly Chinese/Japanese section of Sao Paulo, although most of the residents there are of European background.

This is ironic. I was shopping for tires for my Caprice Wagon today and went off on a rant to my friends about how they have no white-walls on the shelf (not wide-whites of course, but thin whites) it wasn't even that long ago that they were fairly commonplace. What is this world coming to?

I remember when blackwall tires on a Cadillac would have been laughed off the dealers lot and just the mention of a Cadillac "truck" would have been considered sacrilege.

From the old japanese section (Liberdade) there are some bas-fond streets... And some XIXth Century buildings (and some older) claiming to be saved. Not really "dangerous" do walk around, but make me sad about this city.

Did you know 15 de Novembro, São Bento, Barão de Itapetininga streets? I was refering about this part of downtown.

I may be a bit young to play this game, but I will say that I've had a lot of fun reading everyone's recollections here.

I remember when...

- Going to the stationer's for a ribbon meant that your typewriter had run out of ink.
- Watch and clock-repairs were cheaper, easier to find and had friendly neighbourhood service.
- Watching TV was the only thing you did when you sat down in front of the Box.
- Getting good reception meant playing with a pair of metal antennae.
- It was the NEWS on at six o'clock, not The Simpsons.
- There was a children's safe-house on every second block. (I think they still have them, but they seem to be much, much, much rarer now. I haven't seen one in at least ten years).
- Electrically-powered entertainment meant gluing your face to the windowglass to watch a thunderstorm.
- Children's toys that plugged into the wall meant that father had found you a model electric railroad (Gosh, I'd spend all day playing with that thing).

I remember when cable t.v. had a remote box that was wired to the cable box and you had a 20 or 30 foot long laying on the floor from the television/cable box to where ever the remote was located. The remote itself had push buttons for the two lines of stations. There were probably, what? 26 or 28 channels on cable at the time. If you wanted channels 2-13 you moved the dial on the right side of the remote then pressed the button, and if you wanted 14-26 you'd move the dial down then press the button.

Can't the tire guy there just cut the white walls out? Afterall the rubber is white, it just gets black when vulcanized. They should be able to slice some white walls on.

Sim, Liberdade! I did enjoy it, Martin, although I liked who was showing me it even better (amiga brasileira)...I don't recall the names of those streets, but I did see the XIX century buildings with balconies and such.
