I'm just down the road in Valdosta. We have the Last Hahira Pickin' coming up this weekend, are you playing?

Are you getting the idea that hats are like stringed instruments? It is hard just to have one!
:p

I'm originally from Adel (well at least from 12-18yo), so I've stomped around Valdosta a few times. Tried to look into playing Hahira awhile back, but didn't work out.

We are playing Stillpond Winery in Arlington, GA on Sat, Dec 5th. Please come over and invite others to spend the day. We'll be playing from about 12-5pm.

I have noticed that on eBay the ads tend to call any used hat "Vintage" just like you see with instruments. It's hard to explain to some folks why there's no such thing as a "Vintage 1985 Fender acoustic guitar."

Welcome to the lounge

I am also a musician. I play upright bass in an acoustic vocal trio. We do Folk, Folkgrass ( bluegrass without the banjo and mando), old time rock and gospel. The guys in our trio wear fedoras. I would highly recomend the Akubra Camp Draft.

Also have to come to Atlanta next Tues to swap amplifiers. Are there any good shops up there where I might potentially find a good fedora?

So far,no one has found a good hat shop in Atlanta or Macon :(

Think I'm about ready to pull the trigger.

After several days of lurking here and reading things all over the web, I think maybe I'll order an Akubra Federation Deluxe IV in Heritage Fawn.

Anyone have one in that color with pics?

Also, if I'm 57.3 would it be wise to go ahead and get the 58?

Thanks for all the help here guys. Truly a great forum.

I am a musician orginally from New York City , a keyboard player, and a senior citizen. I play about once a week doing weddings, cocktail parties, corporate events, etc.. I had been thinking about wearing a hat, since my hair started getting a bit thin on top, and took the plunge last week and ordered a Fedora. I always like this style, since my father wore one, but never thought about wearing one until now.

Not knowing what to get, and since there aren't any hat shops in Atlanta, I decided to order one over the internet and selected this one. http://www.hatsinthebelfry.com/product/wool-fedora-bailey-new-yorker-3811.html

I wore it for the first time, on a job last week, and was really nervous about it. I wear either a Tux or Black suit and shirt and tie, and was not sure how my client would react to my wearing a hat while playing, or how I would look wearing it . Surprisingly, nobody seemed to notice, and the crowd seemed friendly enough. This past Saturday, I wore it for the second time at a Wedding Reception, and was alot less apprehensive about it. By this time, I feel like an old timer at it ;) , and look forward to wearing it again.

I am planning on getting some photos of me wearing it and putting them on my web site....

Yep Pater, you need the 58. If it feels a little loose at first just insert the foam strips under the sweatband for a while. It will soon conform to your head shape.

Ordered the Fed IV today. Went with the Dark Brown because even though I favor lighter-color hats the Heritage Fawn color just looks kinda blah to me for some reason. Of course, that's only my opinion.

Now I hope I like this thing, so I can take the butt-kicking if the Love-of-My-Life doesn't.

Fed IV

I wound up going with the Akubra Fed IV Deluxe. It arrived yesterday, and I'm generally pleased with the hat. The quality seems very good.

I'm not thrilled however mainly because I went with dark brown, and frankly I chose it because it seemed the least objectionable option. I don't really want to be walking around looking like Dr. Jones, because though there's nothing wrong with that look IMHO it's not the look I'm after.

I think I'd prefer the color of most of the Stetson Open Roads I've seen around here. Which is what Silverbelly I guess? But the reason I didn't just go with a Stetson OR in the first place is I don't like a bound brim at all.

Is there a Stetson that's basically the exact same hat as the Open Road but with a raw brim?

If I find something more to my liking I'll probably sell the Akubra if anyone's looking (7-1/4; 58). Can't return it since it's bashed (not steamed though). Figured basically $150 with FREE CONTUS Shipping cause it's brand spanking new after all.

P.S. The Akubra's also pretty warm bordering on hot here on a drizzly 55 degree day in SW Georgia.

You might like the Stetson Chatham or one of the Stetson Gun Club models. They both have a raw edge but the Chatham is a little dressier with a narrower brim. There are several Gun Club models to look at that might be more to your liking. Good luck!
