Restoration

Stopped by Clifton's for dinner last night, and not only are they decorated for Christmas but there's restoration afoot and original tile visible where for years there had been paneling...

This is very promising. My parents used to eat there before I was born and I'd hoped to go there next year when we visit my hometown. Just as I was beginning to research it I found out that it was being sold and I was afraid that it was gone forever. Los Angeles doesn't have a great track record of preserving its historic buildings. I'm glad it fell into the hands of someone who is preservation minded and can see the value of restoration.

Just read that Clifton's premiered it's new neon facade last weekend at the Night on Broadway event. After so many false stories of its impending reopening it looks as if maybe, after 4 years and 5 million dollars, the end of the tunnel is in sight. I'm also glad to see a movement to bring back neon into cities. It certainly livens up the nighttime view.

After 5 years it's finally going to happen! My parents ate here in the 40s and it looks as if I'll finally get the chance to share the experience, although it's now a 1,200 mile drive for me.
