Class AND talent

Lady Day, you sure know how to make a fine suit and how to take a great picture, too! Your creation looks great but it's the way you wear it that really makes it somethin'. Love your style and attitude!

Wow,
Thanks for all the compliments! Im flattered. :D
The design is from a 50s suit dress. And I thought that houndstooth was too yummy to pass up.

thanks again,

LD

Houndstooth works well with a rougher tweed type suit or sportscoat. It was a hunting or outdoor pattern originally I think.

I have a nice glenn Plaid, which is all different houndstooth checks, but the plaid nature breaks up the pattern.

I love the look with a large hounds tooth check in a heavier weight wool three button wide lapel sport jacket. Very LA 1930s.

aaarghhh there was a mini-houndstooth small-enough-for-me suit on eBay which i couldn't afford. Actually the button stance was a little too "late-40s" for my liking, but it only went for $35. I hate being a student.

Isn't there a Fedora Lounge loan shark we can go to in these situations?

I'm a big fan of houndstooth...in fact all of my recent repro jobs have some kind of houndstooth material incorporated into it.

The contrast material on this sports coat is a tan and black with wine colored crosshatchs houndstooth:

This double breasted zoot suit (yes, she is wearing a matching skirt!) is a yellow and brown houndstooth:

I had the left over material used in this two-toned ike jacket:

Plus, this sportscoat that I wore to the QM (which will soon become a suit) is a black and white houndstooth:

I also have a handfull of vintage houndstooth short Ricky Nelson jackets, but my dream is to find something like this:

I owned one of those a few years back. The fabric was kind of like a very fine velveteen, not gaberdine. Can't tell in the photo

I saw one in tucker, and also in Devil in a Blue Dress.

It was sweet. I sold it to Artis before I realized how rare, valuable and cool it was. Not that he ripped me off. He paid a goood wholesle price for it, but I would not part with it for any amount of money now. Not sure why I did then.

The one that got away!

:eek:fftopic: there are three items that, to this day, I kick myself in the pants for not picking up:

a. a 1930's single breasted peak lapel sports coat with a belted back i saw at a thrift store in 2004. This was before I discovered the lounge and I passed on because it had (minimal) moth damage.

b. A burgundy pullover gab shirt (with broad forties collar and knit waistband) I saw in Oregon for $20! I passed on it becuase the knit waistband looked weird to me back then. What a fool!

c. A brown tweed hollywood jacket I saw in Pittsburgh, it was prolly' $30, and I just simply forgot to go back to the store to pick it up before I left town.

You look great in the pictures! Who does your repro work?

Almost all of my repro stuff are from El Pachuco in Fullerton. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they are the best fit for my price range. One of their tailors used to work for Universal Studios. I just bring in my own material and a garment or picture that I'd like to reproduce and what they deliver is always spot on what I wanted.

This past fall I was able to save up a little bit more and I got in contact with Jorge from La Bomba to put together a belted-back/center slit suit with wide bottomed collegiate slacks. I got the coat just in time for the queen mary and now I'm looking forward to the trousers!

a late discovery

...the black/white mini-check suit by "Gianpaulo [sic] Uomo" I've owned for 10 years turns out to be a super-ultra-mini houndstooth. More like fetal puppytooth, really. 20 checks to the inch...the white space is literally ONE thread wide.

Gianpaolo, paesan'. Even more likely Giampaolo.
