Hi all,

Just wondered if any of you wise folks out there knew why some jacket patches are sleeved with a kind of leather frame while others aren't? Is there any history behind this?

As the photos show, some originals are framed while others aren't? Apologies if it's a silly question.

Was thinking about sleeving the patch on my own jacket but don't want to overdo it!

I think you will find both, some patches are even just painted directly on top of the leather. I would think at the time of the war, some pilots simply sewed their own patches on while some might go to their local tailor shops instead. There was no strict regulation I believe in the 1940s.

I think it would depend on what material was on hand for the seamstress/tailor/leather-worker at the time.Wartime rationing and all.Just my opinion.

Probably just depended on the maker of the patch and what his style was. Nice graining on those A-2s.

I also wonder if the ring might be to sew over existing patch holes. A collar would make the patch just wide enough to hide the holes of a previous patch.

The leather border on a unit Patch was a feature of CBI insignia, rarely seen outside the AVG, 10th, 12th or 15th AF.

Insignia painted straight onto the jacket is mostly found on 8th AF jackets.
