It's like the sickest hat I've ever seen, and it's simply b/c of the color. It goes w/ anything, and it's not straight white - It's got these gold/silver hues, depending on the reflecting light. I NEED.

I mean, Italians make really high quality stuff. But honestly, it just doesn't look like Jared's hat, the one he showed to me.

EDIT: I found this last night, and it's VERY close imo. The only thing it's missing is the correct grosgrain size. Is it worth over $1,000 tho? That's what it's listed as.

It could be the angle of the photo ...but this hat looks to have a much lower crown than Depps. I would ask the seller to double check the dimensions. You can buy a lot of hat(s) for $1000. Or commission one made from the best felt in the world for half that price unless you are committed to vintage.

It could be the angle of the photo ...but this hat looks to have a much lower crown than Depps. I would ask the seller to double check the dimensions. You can buy a lot of hat(s) for $1000. Or commission one made from the best felt in the world for half that price unless you are committed to vintage.

Where would you commission one? I really am not a big fan of the idea of having to spend $1k. But that hat that I posted looks very close, and I'm tempted, haha. Because the problem is, I have no idea what the dimensions are, or what I want. I just know that one I posted looks like the hat I want, w/ all the angles and measurements that I would like. I don't think I know enough about these hats to have one made.

It’s vaguely similar to the hat of Mr. Depp’s you sent us. There is an incredible diversity of colors, shapes, appointments, materials, dimensions, etc. We were wearing fedoras long before Mr. Depp and many of them were made before he was born. I bristle a bit at them being called “Johnny Depp’s style.”

Then I suggest you don't know enough (yet) to spend a $1000 on a hat that you are not sure will meet your desired vision. Hat dimensions are deceiving as it is so dependent on camera angle. There are a great number of custom hat makers that will make you a custom hat from the finest materials available (either rabbit or beaver felt) for anywhere from $250 to $400. There are others that will do it for more but if you shop those lower costs are easily found. Many of us hat aficionados have learned the hard way through trial and error. We have learned from our mistakes, buying hats with dimensions that end up not suiting us, hats we don't like, hats that represent poor value for the money. We learned through error and slowly upped our collecting game into the more expensive ones. Very few of us started out paying a G Note for our first hat. But if you are bold, have the money then go for it. Just realize that being disappointed might be part of the equation.

Ask @belfastboy if he could do it. I’d also look at Agnoulita on Etsy, Amazon, and his website. If you’re willing to spend more you can reach out to Gannon and others. We have a thread with custom hatters and with some hours of research you can get a feel for what hats they make.

Truthfully I am hesitant until you are clearer on what you want. I can replicate a hat but I need to know more exactly what you require.

Pictures help but as I stated camera angles can be deceiving and the hat that I see in the picture might not be the one that you have in your mind's eye.

I totally understand, and it makes sense. So I guess I'll go w/ that Melegari hat maker. It seems to be the simplest option b/c they seem to have a sort of "copy and paste" formula for this hat. Only question I have left is, how do I know what would be the best option here for the brim to keep that look? Are you able to tell just by eyeballing what JD has in the pic below?

The hat has a fairly high crown so I suggest you want the middle dimension....6.5cm. 5.5 is much too narrow as that is a stingy brim. The 7.5cm is on the wider side for a new hat wearer like you. If you go to my Instagram posts (wolfbrae custom) you will see a picture of one of my students that made his version of the Johnny Depp hat. It has very close to the Melegari dimensions (6.5cm brim).

I've had a couple '50s Stetsons that could hold their brim shaped any way you'd snap them. It's not a trait you will find on every fedora you handle. I'm sure these gentlemen will point you in the right direction. Good luck.

Also, the movie star traits Depp possesses makes that exact hat look a precise way. I mean he's got a white vest w pocket square here, and a peacoat and scarves there. Think of your own style and function while you're on your hat journey.

This type of label was used from 1961 until 1972, so it's fairly safe to say this hat is from the sixties. Looks to be in good shape. If it's affordable I'd go for it.

I'm not familiar with this brand to be honest. No reason to assume it is beaver because the hat doesn't state so. Beaver felt in a hat was and is a selling point. So retailers and manufacturers generally make a point of stating it on the hat if it is beaver. Beaver fur in hats is less common in Europe than it is in the US, but several brands used designations like "castor", "castoria" , "castoro" or "biber" to justify the higher selling prices.
It does have a nice shape, but it's not in the best condition, with some visible mothing on the underside of the brim.
