Hats can certainly appear to have different dimensions in photos based on angles etc. I think this hat has a brim width of at least 3 1/2 inches. I think the reshaping would be pretty simple once you find a donor hat with the right dimensions.

Thanks for your reply! I totally agree in terms of the Fed IV – but looking at some photos of the Adventurer model, it seems quite close. I thought maybe the different sized hat band gives the illusion of a different sized hat. So maybe the Adventurer with a smaller hat band looks larger? Hard to tell.

I guess you're right about contacting a hatter or reshaping another hat.

Cheers!

I have an Akubra Adventurer, and while I like the hat in its own right, unless you have a very small head size the Adventurer will not approach the proportions of that hat. I'm fond of larger all-weather hats too, and have gone through a similar search. I agree with DH that focusing on a used western hat or a custom hat is going to save you time, trouble, and ultimately (maybe!), money.

Best of luck in your search!

Thank you! – I will look out for some used hats then. I find it pretty difficult, since I always have very clear ideas for what I want.

Hello gentlemen,

I hope it is okay to ask this question with a new thread, I'm still rather new to the forum.

I recently watched the movie Hostiles starring Christian Bale, Wes Studi, Rory Cochrane, etc., and I really like the hats that those guys are wearing — Rory Cochrane’s brown hat in particular. See photo attached.

I want to find a hat that is as close as possible to this. It looks almost like an Indiana Jones kind of Fedora / adventurer hat, but it seems to me that the brim is wider. That might just be a matter of perspective – opinions, anyone? I am particularly fond of the high crown, wide brim largeness of the thing, so that's important. Also, I am looking for the hat to be heavily weather resistant, to wear in rain and sun and snow, preferably in the realm of an Akubra.

Akubra Fed IV? Adventurer maybe? They seem close but not quite what I am looking for. Any opinions are appreciated.

Best regards!

BD

Good movie. I just recenty watched it for a 2nd time. Amazing how much I missed some how. Hat? I'd bet money the hat you have shown is an Akurbra of one sort or another. Buy an open crown version and shape it the way you want or have the Hatter (David Morgan?) do it for you.

Interesting – that would be great, since I am a sucker for Akubras. What makes you think it's an Akubra, though? Just curios.

I think the most difficult part is the brim shape – it has this angled or flipped down brim (not sure what the proper name is), where the front and back are bent down. I don't know whether this shape is "in" the brim or whether it is just a straight brim bent down. I am probably not making a lot of sense.

Believe it or not, I actually tried to shape an Akubra Snowy River that way, just out of curiosity. Obviously, the crown just wasn't high enough, so it looked pretty stupid. Like a glove forced to act as a sock or something. The downward-bent of the brim was also one thing that didn't work. But maybe, just maybe, with the right hat I could reshape it.

Cheers!

I second Deadly's suggestion. Depending on your hat size and your patience for the hunt you should be able to pick up a used western to match the dimensions. The good news is the hat in the movie has a very lived in look so you are not trying to replicate a new look. I have had success ironing a western brim flat and then dipping the front and back by weighting the front of the brim and hanging the rest of the hat off the edge of the ironing board. Give it a good shot of steam and let sit overnight. You can control the amount of dip or bend to the brim by varying the length of overhang. Repeat the next day with the back of the hat.

I agree totally, @Woodtroll, about the proportions of the Adventurer. This hat approximates the Akubra Camp Draft much more Imo. Without measuring i recall the Adventurer has much more taper to the crown and not the height of the CD as well as a narrower brim.
I too was drawn to this hat in the movie. CD has a similar ribbon but does have a thin ribbon bound brim. Can’t tell in the movie pics if it’s a raw edge or not.
Since you’re a sucker for Akubra, @bonedaddy, the Camp Draft should fit the bill for you for not a lot Of money.
A few Hostile encounters and some weather wear and you’ll be right there with ol Roy.
Welcome to the lounge.

“Hostiles” is set in 1892 and the campaign hat for that time was 5 3/4" OC with a dimensional brim of 2 3/4” front and back with 3” on the side. It was composed of a mix of 2/3 fine coney and 1/3 finely blown Nutria for a body weight of 4 3/4 ounces. The crown had star or snowflake like vents punched out on each side and the brim had three concentric rows of stitching near the brim edge and an 8 ligne ribbon.

Thanks guys for all the useful feedback. I'm sure I'll be able to replicate the look with one of your tips. I checked out the Campdraft and it does seem similar, although I suspect that even there the brim may be to small. My head is pretty big, so the RM Williams will probably not fit the bill. Ugh, I wish there was a quality hat shop around to try on some models. NONE.

I guess a used brown Stetson 10 gallon hat or something may work. I'll keep you posted in case I actually find something.

Does anyone have any experience with the weather resistance of Stetsons? Would a Stetson felt hat hold up as well as an Akubra?

Cheers!

The Rough Rider could be a good start. You might want to look around for a used one.

I have never cut a brim myself, but that's a modification folks make. I just Googled "Fedora Lounge - trimming a brim" and got a few thread links to check out.

So just an update: I just ordered a new Rough Rider Loden from Australia, it only cost me 115 Euros (I live in Austria) including shipping. Should arrive within 2 weeks. The hat is so nice, I'm not sure whether I'll actually have the heart to modify it, but if I do – where should I post progress?

One thing though: my Snowy River in 59 is a tad too large – I have to keep tissues behind the sweat band for a proper fit – so I ordered the Rough Rider in 58. If I measure my head, it is an exact 58. Not sure whether that was a good choice. Do you guys think it will fit? I'm scared, haha.

Cheers!

This may not be much help, but there are a couple of things I would consider with an exact size measurement.

1) Akubras fit some people a little loose initially, and then the leather sweat-band shrinks a bit to conform to the head over time. This is not every person's experience, but it has been described here more than once.
2) Akubras can vary in actual sizing, so you just kind of have to wait until the hat arrives to see how well it fits.

Can anyone help me with this? I found this Stetson 100 travel case and hat. Trying to get help with the following questions: 1.) any idea how old this is? 2.) did these come with a hat and if so, does it appear that this hat was the original hat that came with it (it seems to be brand new!) 3.) Any idea what this is worth?

Case is not made for that hat. Limited pics show it to be a 60’s era hat to me. Not personally familiar with the 10X. You want to sell the case, pm me.

The hat is not original to the box. The box came with a Stetson One-Hundred hat that was clearly branded as such. The hat in your photos looks to be in great shape, but doesn’t appear to be anything special...just a 10X and it’s not of a vintage that makes it very desirable. The case by itself is worth something, but it’s not super valuable.

As for value, we try not to appraise hats here. It’s worth what someone will pay for it and that fluctuates wildly for reasons known and unknown. I will say it’s not worth anywhere near what I saw it listed at recently.
