Hello and an N-1 question

Hello all, first time posting, but have been viewing content for some time now, and finally decided to create an account this last week. I'm pretty new to the whole proper men's fashion, I've been a big fan of natural materials for some time, but haven't really had anything that was on the fashion side of the fence. That said, I have been wanting an N-1 for a couple of years, and finally decided to pick one up, a Dehen in navy blue with black mouton - it's a fantastic jacket, but.. here's where the question comes in, I bought a medium, off eBay, having never tried any of these jackets on, and it fits like a glove throughout the torso, the sleeves ride up about 1-1.5" when I lift them to a position like grabbing a steering wheel. I was quoted $75 to lengthen the storm cuffs (they wouldn't be able to extend the waxed canvas), and I'm wondering if that will ruin this jacket, and I'd be better off selling this one, and finding a large? I'm 6'2" and 167 lbs with a 39-39.5 chest and 26.5-27" arm length.

Leave the jacket as it is and enjoy it. You don’t walk around with zombie arms and who cares if it rides up while driving. Adding length will tank any resale value.

Totally get that I don't walk around like that, but I did buy this jacket with the intent of replacing a down coat when doing manual labor and using a tractor for snow blowing (in the driving position). I wanted something that I could also walk around in the woods with, and not worry about snagging a branch or thorn on, as that is a constant fear with synthetics and I do hike about 6-7 days a week. Maybe this is just a long arms problem, and they were designed to be this way?

If I were to lengthen the storm cuffs, would it defeat the purpose of the hidden storm cuff, and actually draw moisture (and cold) in to the coat?

I had looked in the n-1 thread about fit, as well as all over the internet, before deciding the medium would work.. I also ordered a Buzz Rickson's, but in a large, which should be here in a couple of weeks - maybe I'll wait and see how that feels. I'm an impatient person, and I see that Dant has a black one in stock, in a large, so maybe I'll just get that and sell this blue one... I wish there was a place in Maine that had these things in stock to try on.

If you want long arms on an N1, look no further than Iron Heart. Similar price point and very well made. I love mine.

I’m 6’2” and they’re jackets and shirts are all made longer than typical North American makers IMO.

Totally get that I don't walk around like that, but I did buy this jacket with the intent of replacing a down coat when doing manual labor and using a tractor for snow blowing (in the driving position). I wanted something that I could also walk around in the woods with, and not worry about snagging a branch or thorn on, as that is a constant fear with synthetics and I do hike about 6-7 days a week. Maybe this is just a long arms problem, and they were designed to be this way?

If I were to lengthen the storm cuffs, would it defeat the purpose of the hidden storm cuff, and actually draw moisture (and cold) in to the coat?

What size is yours? The only reason I didn't go with the Iron Heart version, they don't offer it in a full wool, specifically mouton, version - as they use the alpaca/wool blend, which is why I ordered the slightly cheaper Buzz Ricksons version, just to see how that looks/feels.

As a fellow hiker i can promise you that the dehen is too heavy for anything over 20f while hiking

I've hiked in it the last couple of days, its been right around 29-33°F with some wind, and I found it very comfortable, after a mile or so, I just dropped the zipper a little (maybe 2-3") to vent, and it was great - just wearing a lightweight smartwool long sleeve under it. I do have the issue of, when its cold out, I run cold, and when its hot out, I run hot (guessing not enough body fat). It's also quite cold/windy in Maine with the coastal winds and humid air.

Concur with not modifying what you have, as selling the unmodified item will be easier.

When driving, some gloves with "extended" length wrists, such as the lightweight US Aviator's gloves might do. A properly sized outer set of heavier gloves (perhaps also with extended wrist) over them for the cold.

Shop around and measure your hands correctly, using a genuine US Military sizing chart.

These Aviator gloves should fit "snugly" and will often allow picking up a dime. GI versions made of flame-resistant Nomex, and it may be that similar gloves now come with fingertips suitable for cell phones.

USGI versions available in Black palm leather, Black Nomex fabric. Sage Green cloth/Grey leather, and Tan cloth/Brown leather seen.

Aviator's gloves quite thin and supple. Nearly zero water-resistance unless fabric is sprayed with Durable Water Repellant (DWR). Suggest wearing alone in car, or as "under glove" if using a properly sized outer glove. All over Amazon, so DO shop around.

Big fan of Outdoor Research gloves, but measure hand carefully, using their technique. Some OR gloves run a bit small, but they have a good return policy. Check out their Military section for gloves, and occasional sales. Liberally applying DWR to cloth/leather helps weather resistance appreciably.

This one is an XL. I usually wear **L in total western UHFs and OD denim CPO etc.

I’m 6’2”, 175 Lbs. 42” chest of that helps.

Just wanted to say thank you for encouraging me NOT to make modifications to the jacket After a long think and really sitting with it, I decided to sell it back to the world, I took a slight loss, but at least I now know that a medium from Dehen in the N-1 is not my size.

I did get a shipping confirmation for the BR jacket I ordered from Japan, about a week ago, should be here in another two weeks, so I'm excited to see how that fits and continue the journey into better clothing.
