Thanks, Rusty, for the pics of Mike's shop. How's it shaping up by now?

Bolt, did you bring anything home from that hat shop?

Gary White's shop in Buffalo was apparently supposed to be closed Saturday morning when my wife and I arrived. However, he was custom fitting a client and let us in. During the fitting, Gary allowed me to walk around his shop and take photos of anything and everything. After the client left, Gary showed us around the shop, talked to us about everything from mink felt to Robin Hood flanges, to back-bow varieties.

We talked for about an hour, as I continued to snap away, and he gave me permission to post the photos on the Lounge. Gary is easily one of the nicest guys I've ever had the pleasure to meet.

In addition to a large stock of new rabbit and beaver bodies, the shop is stocked with hundreds of old Cavanagh edge bodies.

Note the spool of ribbon in this case that matches the ribbon on my milan from Optimo - which I was wearing. Gary recognized it right away and told me that he and Graham had a ribbon swap about 10 years ago. The ribbon on my Optimo started in Gary's shop.

I was actually the customer at Gary's The Custom Hatter while Lefty was there taking pictures.

Gary was nice enough to meet me at his shop a couple of hours before he opened. It was my first time there. I agree with Lefty, Gary is a very nice guy and very helpful. The 5 crushed hats on the counter awaiting renovation are mine. Gary took the time to explain what was possible with the hats and pick new ribbons from an amazing selection of new and vintage. I ended up opting for a complete renovation of all hats. I figured all three felts are good quality and I would like 5 hats I can be proud of wearing.

I am now thinking about having Gary make me a custom hat.

That's great! I didn't want to bother you, since you're the one who had an appointment, but it was pretty clear to me that you're a real hat guy. Be sure to show off the custom (if you decide to get one) and all of those rennovations when you get them back. :)

Gary's got a second website and is having a 3rd built for western hats. I have no idea why he needs 3 sites.

He told me that he doesn't use email in his business because he doesn't want to forget to get back to anyone who contacts him. He said that he'll always return calls, but loves when people come in for custom fittings.

Man -- thanks for putting that all together. Wow! I wish I could teleport myself there right now! Just fantastic.

Cheers,
