Feathers are for the birds

As the old song goes, "You're never fully dressed without a pin"!

Nice TWA pin, nickn5. It'll look great on your OR.

Here's an old Foresters of American screwback from ebay. It'll go on my green VS Forrestor.

Some very nice pins gentlemen. OK, actually haven't seen one that the wearer shouldn't be proud to sport. Liking some that good ol' ol' skool metal.

Today I received my very first hat pin that I won on eBay.

I think these may be quite common, but it's a nice silver sombrero which I put on my recently "porkpied" homburg which, incidentally, I been wearing these last two days through the snow.

Bashing my Sydney, I thought I'd see how it looks with bird stuff on it.
Decided to keep it clean...just the pin now. It's wet and on my head w/ a pinched diamond bash (close to the one in my avatar).

How do you...

attach a tie tack or other pin with a similar spike on the back to a hat ribbon? Or the FFA pin, mine from 1958 has a screw back. I looked at my old tie tacks, found a couple that would look good on a hat, but can't understand how you attach the pin so it lies flush with the hat. There is evidentally a way that doesn't end up with a pin through the felt. Thanks.
