Reviving an old thread. Been reading a lot of Mencken recently, and there's another factor in play that gets far too little attention: Sara Haardt, Mrs. Mencken. She suffered from many things; TB, primitive medicine, unsuccessful surgeries... HLM is well documented to have been exceptionally distracted when Sara's health was poor, and the first pic of him looking... old was aboard the ocean liner when he and his brother August went to Europe shortly after Sara's passing in 1935.
Certainly he never changed his views, but there's a certain sour note in his writings from after 1935, especially on the man he called Roosevelt II. FDR's infamous 1934 Gridiron Club address was made while Sara was on her deathbed, and such an attack as that would simply be unforgivable to a product of the Victorian era like Mencken.
