Thanks BT! I'm a 7 1/2 Long Oval or 7 5/8.
I'd be looking for a pith helmet with a nice
vintage look like yours. I would actually want
to try it wet during hot hikes. I hike a lot but
overheat easily. I have a very ugly, cheap straw
pith helmet I use now- allows air flow but I don't
have to worry if I lose it.

If you do come across one, I'd be very interested.
Promise to post pictures, of course!

Hmmm... that is big...

I fear that saturating a vintage Pith Helmet in water would destroy it-
Shrinking of the vintage pith-wood and the vintage cloth cover could have you sporting a banana hat. Lining and sweatband may get trashed.

I'd try the water thing with one of the $19 eBay jobs- they're real pith!

And adjustable via the gift of velcro...

Save the vintage for the study.

I enjoy wearing a pith helmut in hot weather. I wore one from India while in Belize and it worked out rather well.I got to the point where I did'nt feel it on my head. I got many strange looks but then again I was'nt the one running around looking for shade. The crimson colored liner is used because that color seems to absorb the heat better than other.

That is a beautiful specimen. I have always been intrigued about the origin of the pith helmet -- can anyone provide a quick review?

Great helmet, BT! I have to admit, I can't really bring myself to actually wear a pith helmet anywhere, and those Cawnpore style helmets are particularly large! Very cool (no pun intended), nonetheless.

A lovely find - you rarely see the quilt covered piths, as the padding was largely seen as superflous even as early as the First World War, and I've never seen it on a civvy pith helmet - I'd go as far as to say that the quilted piths were only worn on "The Grim" - which makes me fairly confident that this is a officer's private purchase pith helmet, most likely British Army as opposed to Indian Army (never seen Indian Army officers wearing padded - seems to be a thing worn by British Officers who were overly scared of the sun!). And the one you have is a rather unusual variation of this breed, with that unusual over the top strap and the distinct lack of folded pugree. An educated guess would date this to about 1905-1925. All in all, a lovely find!
