100 Years Hat Klipper (04/01/1958)

A well-known Offenbach specialty store for men's hats, Heinrich Klipper, Frankfurter Straße 5, celebrates its 100th anniversary today. The furrier and captain Heinrich Klipper .., from Mühlheim founded 1858 in the Offenbacher Schloßstrasse a fur and hats shop. Mr Klipper was a lively business man with a keen eye for the development of the men's fashion: very soon he changed his business into a special shop for men's hats and caps.

The company picked up a strong upturn, and an expansion of the business premises was necessary after a short time. Mr. Klipper moved his company more into the city center and finally opened a new shop - Frankfurter Strasse 5 - shortly before the turn of the century. In 1909 he handed over the company of his daughter Meta Klipper, the current owner. Fraulein Klipper had spent two years at the Handelsschule before the takeover of the company and then trained herself practically. Through good and hard times Fraulein Klipper led the company. Especially in the Second World War, she had to overcome many difficulties, and after the end of the war it was necessary to remove the war damage that had arisen. The owner took the opportunity to have the sales rooms modernized according to the given possibilities. Even today, it is the name of the company and is popular and popular in many old Offenbach families. Hearty congratulations to the anniversary!

H. Klipper Timeline (Elke Leber)

Hat shop Hch. I can confirm the Klipper in Frankfurter Strasse;
The entries in the trade registers are, however, contradictory on the founding date (this must be for a new location, S. Heck)

Heinrich Klipper started on the 4th of April 1892 as a furrier with a shop and a hatter in Frankfurter Straße 5. He was also the owner of the property.

As of March 31, 1913, the business was run by Heinrich August Klipper and Meta Auguste Klipper (daughter), from April 4, 1914, Meta Auguste Klipper is the sole owner.

In a later business card "canceled plants until 1969" is indicated as founding date 1858.

From 1.12.1946, Meta Auguste Klipper expands its assortment with gift items and toys. It runs the business until 4.6.1963. The commercial register writes that due to the succession of the company the company goes over to Elisabeth Jung. She leads the retail trade with hats and hats until 31.12.1965.

I received this fantastic information from the lady (Elke) who sold the following H. Klipper Stiff Felt Hat (belonged to her GGF) to me.

Ottmar Reich (Lindenberg), 58cm, Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, Brim 2 1/2 inches, probably late 1950s early 1960s. I am not really sure what to make of this one because it has the feel of an older hat. The felt is really fantastic and easily dry creases. It's very well made with high quality components. The paper label is hand written which is strange and liner is glued in (could have been altered?). The Ottmar Reich Soft Felts I have come across are of a later time period so nothing to compare it to. Ottmar Reich was best known for Straw Boater Hats but started making Soft Felt hats in the late 1920s.

Welcome back Celia, good to hear you feeling better, nice Burg!
Thank you very much, it is good to be back! And I am happy to have finally found a worthwhile hat on the local flea market, hopefully the first of many :)

Have some catching up to do before I miss all the good hats. Another great one, Steve. Really like the crown patch of this one. That alone would have won me over.

J. Hückel ´s Söhne "Flexible Seal Velour", French Point 7 / 60cm, Crown Open 6 inches, Brim 2 1/4 inches, probably later 1930s. I haven't come across a "Flexible Seal Velour" before and this one is really fantastic. As usual the JHS Velour is amazing / unmatched (color, density, pliability, finish).

Keep them coming, Steve. We can't have enough of beautiful hats. I actually found one of these recently in what should have been my size (more or less). Also a 57 but it was strangely large on my head, so I didn't buy it. Regret that now of course, but what can you do?

Contrary to popular belief, I haven't fallen off the face of the planet, I have just not been around because of illness. Anyway, I have missed this place and hope you are all well! It looks like it will take me some time to catch up... In the mean time, I thought I would post yesterday's find: a 1970s black Habig homburg. Still needs a bit of steaming and brushing, but the condition I found it in is great considering it was sitting on a car bonnet on the flea market.

Not many new additions recently, but this one I am pleased with. Let this one go on a previous shopping spree and regretted it since then. Couldn't find it again next time around, but third time was a charm: it was still there after all. Sämisch in brown, size 56. Chamois finish, raw edge brim at 6cm and crown at 11cm at the pinch. Made by VEB (Vereinigte Hutwerke) in Guben, East-Germany. Very well made hat in a superb finish and nice deep colour, except maybe the sweatband could have been done in a finer leather (but that's only a small thing). Really like the ribbon treatment too: very unusual. My guess would be sixties.

Stefan, Thanks! That is a great looking VEB Hutwerke Guben (what was left in Guben after WWII was nationalized). They lasted to 2000. I heard from a reliable source that the machinery ended up in China.

(Make sure to checkout the photo link at the end of the article.)

Steve, thanks. I did check your site first after I found this hat and found the pictures there too. Been looking for the actual catalogue of the exhibition but no luck so far. Another appeal for me was that it's a DDR-relic.

Resolut Homburger Hutfabrik "Stra?d ", 58cm, Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, Brim 2 3/4 inches, probably mid 1950s. This is my first Resolut Homburger Hutfabrik find. I saw a few in the Gotisches Haus (Gothic House) Bad Homburg archives. Resolut Homburger Hutfabrik was in Köppern near by Homburg vor der Höhe (Bad Homburg). The felt is really great. It's of a heavier weight but easily dry creases. The form and construction are fantastic. Not sure what the fourth letter is in the quality type "Qual. Stra?d".
