Echter Mayser

Size 60cm. This one is stamped 17 September 1952 inside the sweatband so a rare older one. It has interesting brim stitching and a bunch of brim curl. Not sure if it's a factory crease but whoever did it did a super job. Also in very good condition.

Here's the Mayser that I bought last week. Some of you may have seen the auction images in another thread, which showed the hat to have lost its creases/bash. And it arrived with quite a bent brim.

It was advertised as "a 1980s woman's hat" (!)

I've applied some light steam and tried to rebash according the period ads that were posted, though I think it will take a few attempts to get the brim even.

It looks like it has a sort of pork-pie crown, but it's taller, so it really wears just like a normal fedora. I can also put a pinch in front. It's quite an elegant hat and is a little out of the ordinary. Could easily be worn either casually or formally.

And here it is!

That is a great catch, and especially at the price you paid. Them thinking it a Women's hat just goes to show how little is known these days by those who sell many hats (inconsistencies and inaccuracies are over abundant on sites like eBay for example).

Absolutely.
I've found my last couple of hats purely by accident. Apart from my '1980s woman's hat', the last fur felt hat I got was described as being made out of 'fleece'.
And you can often tell by the sizing descriptions: One seller recently advertised a hat as being "size small (about 105")"

The sellers have been very lovely, though. And very nice to deal with. Many people sell all kinds of 2nd hand clothes and can't know all the ins-and-outs and backgrounds of all the clothing items they sell. To many, an old old hat is just an old hat and nothing more.

Hello davidraphael,

nice hat, he was also once in my possession. I once bought him on Ebay.
Its original shape was round. German PokPie. This form he got from me.
Unfortunately I have no more of this original photo.
But photos after cleaning.
