I must defer.

My example was extreme, but I thought I saw and read articles about loden/tracht/landhaus elements in the cities.

But, it has been a couple years since I was in Berlin, and we prefer Austria, and areas like Bad Aussee, where all you SEE is Trachten.

You're spot on, griffer, but I'd think that it's more likely to see this stuff in, say, Munich for example. Maybe there are people in Berlin wearing Loden/Tracht, but if that's so, then I just don't happen to see them. Hey, I'm probably keeping the wrong company... :D

And don't tell me about Austria...I was born there...which is why I live in Berlin now... ;)

A little too provincial, too country for your tastes?

I was born in Louisiana, raised in Texas.

Berlin was a great city, but I think the country boy in me likes a mountain hike, fresh lake trout or a jaegerschnitzel over a hoppelpoppel or curry wurst. ;)

BTW, ever been to 8MM? Sort of a musician's speakeasy in die Mitte?

No, it's not too provincial. In fact, seven years ago, I moved to the Allgäu, deep down in the south of Germany, near the Bodensee area, to live with a girl, a bunch of horses, numerous cats and three dogs in an old farmhouse. *sigh*

Don't get me wrong. I love Berlin. I hate Berlin. Well, yeah...you see, It's a rugged relationship we're having, Berlin and me. For now 'm back here, but I'm not going to stay for good. I'll be moving back to the countryside sooner or later. I love the paced down life there. It's doing me good. But for now, I just have to stay here. Personal stuff.

And no, I've never been to the 8MM. I walked past the venue a lot, but my dealings never led me there. Is it any good?

On the homepage of the hatmuseum in Guben there were two books or brochures available for sale (one about hatmaking in Guben and the other one about cloth making) but the email from the shop does not work anymore. So I called the predecessor mueseum as well as the city of Guben. Neither could give me some information about where to buy those books :(.

Beautiful felt with green and gold tones blended. Brim 2-3/8" front and 2-1/4" all around. Adjustable sweatband and "Ventilo" ventilated forehead area of sweatband. Looks like something was removed from the ribbon bow. Originally purchasedfrom Lord & Taylor's of New York. I don't know if any of the numbers give date information. Almost no one wanted this and it went for $13.01 on ebay.

Very nice! You got a super deal. May I ask what it was listed as on eBay?

The Ventilo and sweat (adjustable sweat and retractable string loop for hanging) are typical of Habigs of this vintage (50s - mid 60s). You can page back and see some of mine. The colors (Green and Gold) and ribbon treatment are Austrian / Trachten elements. Yours looks very similar to DoctorJ's Habig posted earlier in this thread. I believe his didn't have a liner.

From what I can tell the last number is ######/###/53 is the production year. If you go back in this thread you will see where I was able to verify this with a 1940 Habig Homburg (production date was also stamped on the inside of the sweat). If you get a chance can you check the back side of the sweat?

Fraenkel

Here are some better pics of my new old stock Fraenkel (Wien). I am thinking this one is late 60s - 70s. Very nice dark olive that doesn't really come through in the picture. Fraenkel which started back in the 1800s merged with Brüder Böhm Hüte in the late 50s. Brüder Böhm Hüte was one of the 3 Nový Jičín (originally Neutitschein) hat companies along with Hückel and Peschel.

Wegener Biber

More better pics of the old new stock hats I posted earlier.

Wegener Biber (Beaver) , size 59cm. I am thinking 1970s. The felt is a mix of rabbit/hare and beaver with a very nice finish. The color is very unusual and only really comes out correctly in one of the pics.

This is the true color!

Piccadilly Velour

Piccadilly, size 59cm. Probably 1970s. This is one could be a OEM. The felt on this hat is pretty amazing. Very much like Hückel / TONAK seal velour. The color is actually dark brown but looks more black in the photos.

Mayser Ausseer

Mayser Ausseer, size 59cm. I am thinking late 60s with this one. It has a back bow and love the brown / gold color combo. Although classic Trachten I was told because of the gold trimming it was known as the 'Anwaltshut' (lawyer's hat) in the 60s and earlier.

Mayser Wagrain Bergell

Mayser Wagrain Bergell, size 60cm. Alpen style hat with elaborate trimmings. Probably the 70s. I know this type of hat is not appreciated by most on the FL but this a very high quality hat. The felt color, feel and finish are super.

@mayserwegener: how many German hats do you own meanwhile?

That gold/brown Mayser seems to be the same model like a Mayser I have, I think I posted it here as well.

Other than that, the town of Lindenberg, which was home to numerous hat manufacturers in the past, also has a hat museum:

They even have a yearly hat day and a hat queen:

And here is a little bit about the town's history:

I have many German and Austrian made hats along US and Italian. I will have to count them all some day. :)

That Auseer style is Austrian but it appears to have spread throughout Germany. I got that brown and gold new old stock Mayser from a hat friend in Augsburg. I have others from Austrian makers.

I am aware of the Lindenberg hat museum but have never visited. Also current location of Mayser and previously to other hat makers such as Ottmar Reich. Mayser was originally in Ulm but moved to Lindenberg after WWII.

By the way I am still working on the Hückel mystery. I have run into a bunch of dead ends but supposedly the museum in Nový Jicín sent my requests to TONAK. I also have someone in Germany trying to find some information on what happened post WWII.

PolkaP Hats & Hückel

Hückel had a operation in Skoczów, Poland up to end of WWII. I realized that PolkaP hats is located in Skoczów, Poland. I checked with a source and verified that PolkaP hats was indeed Hückel. Similar situation to what happened with TONAK.

Hückel Display Placards

I recently received these Hückel small display placards. They are supposedly from the early 1930s. The top one has a fold out stand and is electroplated cardboard. The one in the lower right is made of thin metal. Notice the Seal-Velour mention.
