Just made a absolute steal from Vinted, Swedish Tretorn leather and goretex mocc toe boots with vibram soles, got them for 20 euro, buyer said they just need a little clean, as they say here, no pasa nada!
They're model Garde Stovel Vinter GTX and are normally 200+ euros here, they're as good if not better than my heavy winter hike boots

I’ve been toying with the idea of a side-zip ankle boot that bridges the gap between dressy western and work boot: almond toe, Cuban heel but a thicker leather and sole with no toe bug. Looks like Brisselblack have something like that, but if anyone knows of an alternative please let me know!

If those lovely new engineers haven't fit that particular bill, one option might be to look at Jeffrey West's Lynott model:

I've been tempted by a pair of these for years. In my mind, they'd be a good fit for a do-it-all weekend away shoe when I wanted something that I could wear out to the theatre with proper trousers, with jeans, and be an easy on-off option in the airport while still having the better coverage of boots (vs penny loafers) in cooler and/or wetter weather. Don't know about the fit, though I believe they can do custom options for an upcharge (which would include adding the buckle at a time when they didn't offer it on this shape, so might include a wider fit if needed?).

Look even better in person than the last shot. Really sharp.

I live in a single pair of Chelsea boots typically. I went from New rock in my teens to a cheap brand called red tape. I decided to invest in a nicer pair with zero knowledge so bought a pair of Grinders. They were decent and lasted me a couple of years before the uppers split.

I like versatility and the ability to handle British winter sludge and rain. So I decided to replace my fallen Grinders with a pair of Meermin waxy commanders. They're beautiful, sturdy but good LORD do they shred my feet apart. I've never known a break-in like it. Bruises across my toes, blisters, the works!

Grinders are too often overlooked, imo, but there's little better than them in their price range.

That's awesome :) it's so sad when a pair of beautiful engineers(or shoes overall) don't fit your feet

Particularly with engineers, given there's so little can be done (save if they're a bit loose, in which case a beefy insole is an answer).

I agree, I've owned three pairs of Grinders and £100 for Goodyear welted every-day boots is a great deal. They did seem to be a bit hit and miss on break-in. Two pairs I just stuck on and they were immediately comfortable. One pair took months, filling with water and freezing etc. The pain of the Meermin's is making me miss them, I hope they pay off in time.

Tretorn makes some awesome stuff! I had a pair of old military boots made by them that I used for years :)

Cheers!

It's an interesting, slightly wonderful day, when you realize you like something so well it almost hurts to take it off. This is the case with this very well broken in Wesco 7500 Engineers - soft, comfortable, better than a slipper. They do need a nice oiling soon, but only to spruce them up a little, they could not be more comfortable.

The pants are Filson double knee canvas, which is in need of it's own break-in.

Russel Mocs have been sent back for a new pair.
Update

Russell sent an (what i suspect is autogenerated) email asking if i would like to leave a review. I have 2/5 and more or less posted what I had here. The collab partner, Iron Snail, reached out almost immediately. He too said my attempts to contact him went to a jumk folder. I have no reason to doubt this. He seemed genuinely concerned and stated he would intervene.

I'm definitely a fan of Wesco's myself. Easily among the heaviest boots jutting out from under my bed for sure.

When I make it to the US again, though likely to be some years away yet, I very much have my eye on trying a pair of Mister Lous. I could save up for them now, but way too much to risk buying at this distance and finding they don't fit!

I was lucky, i went into the shop Vancouver, and he had my size in, true to size seems to work for me, but ive seen lots of people say they size down half a size, like anything, if you can try them on thats the best way.
