Is it only me genuinely never gives a thought to the perceived manliness of my own footwear?

One thing to consider with shorter boots like that is that they might get caught up in your trousers every time you sit or bend your legs.

That clearly is not an issue with Chelseas or side zip boots because they are much tighter around the ankle. I really like the first peco boots you posted. Those with a black suede/roughout shaft imho are going to look amazing.

I imagine a lot has to do with how wide your trews are. I tend not to wear anything smaller than about 17/18" at the hem, and it's never been a problem for me.

What would you change about them?

I exchanged a few more messages with him. Seems like a lot of customisation is on the table (buckles, straps, heel shape, etc). The 2.3mm black Indonesian pull-up pictured would be $250 plus $70 shipping.

I’m not ready to throw money at him yet, but wondering if this is the 5* of boots.

If they work out size and quality wise I do like the design a lot.

They look a bit like a Role Club rip off to me.

Things I personally don’t like are the buckles (damn they’re chunky!) and the slope of the heel imho is just too exaggerated. The lower strap also looks weird and I don’t understand why it extends so much above the last row of stitching?

They are reasonably priced though so perhaps a good way to venture into engineer boots?

I like it a lot, esp the chunky buckles. Subjectives aside, though, it would be great if there were affordable/mid price, good boots of this style.

I love a stacked logger/packer heel - for comfort and aesthetics.

If I do order another pair of engineers I’ll probably get one or two extra stacks on the heel of my Big Girl Boots.

problem with bakers is that its always a hit and miss on the sizing with them. most of my friends sold their boots they got from bakers due to sizing issues mostly too small and narrow

I have bought four pairs of boots from them and they all fit great. Part of this might be that I always order 10.5 D unless it is a narrower last and then I go with an E width. I guess I have been lucky.

My self as well. All my Whites or Wesco come from Baker's. Ordering boots over the internet or even with a foot tracing sent can be tricky and fit is always subjective. My fit suggested by Bakers was actually slightly different than what I went with. Since I trust no one, I simply ordered a random, stock pair of Smoke Jumpers and Job Masters for a test fit purposes so I could try them on, then returned them and ordered my custom pairs. The extra money spent on shipping test fit boots saved me from ordering a wrong size so it was well worth it to me to spend the extra cash for peace of mind.

I’ve noticed some pics like that lately. I’ve been wearing zipper kits in my RW work boots since 1998. They're super functional in 8” boots. Aesthetics wise I guess it’s dealer’s choice.

I can't understand a lick of Japanese and there were no subtitles but the guy who was doing the demo looks like he just put on the accessory to do away with the whole routine of tying your laces and how easy it was to slip your boot on/off

The buckles are too large and bulky, the strap width looks too wide, the last doesn't flatten out properly in the toe and the instep is too high/slanted, this gives the boot the look of leaning forward too much. Also, the shaft is too wide.

The biggest thing is that the last just is not right for an engineer. As with almost all new makers trying to do engineers really quickly without actually doing real research, they seem to simply use Chelsea boot lasts or whatever slim last they already have and turn that into an engineer. If you really know your engineers, you can spot that from a mile away and it looks cheap.

Also, I would advise you not to buy anything made with Indonesian leather uppers. Indonesian tanneries are not there yet.

I'm not saying to avoid Indonesian boots overall. I have Onderhouds and love them (lace to toe logger boots) and Winson looks fantastic.

Used to see these in my local army surplus place back in the eighties, cut for German para boots as were all the rage then. Not a fan myself, but these ones actually look nicely done.

Speed and convenience. Why deal with lacing and re-lacing boots all the time when you can just zip and go? That sort of thing. I've not been a fan in the past, but I could see the attraction of these (and aesthetically, these ones are much nicer than any I've seen before) for airport use. I tend to fly in penny loafers for convenience, but if these made it easier in boots, that would be a plus in Winter. Not that I'll be flying this side of December 2021, but....

Zipper in front of tongue. It just makes boots that stay tight up the ankle easy to get on and off. They stay waterproof

I can totally see how this would speed up airport screenings...and for taller boots, they make sense. For mocs, maybe not quite as much, here in SoCal they would look a bit out of place. Especially with the cuffs and loud socks- overkill.
