Footwear to go with our jackets

They're the ones, and I just saw them going for about $280. Now the agony begins. I just last week got the Rand Lace-ups in dark brown to complete my collection (with tan and black) because whenever I find a style that is perfect for me in every way I feel compelled to grab them while I still can. Those Addisons are sweet, though.

Where did you see them at that price?

I have 4 pair of red wings that get used in a bit of a seasonal rotation. The oldest pair that have seen hard use are reserved for measurable snow on the ground days. Newest pair of muleskinner iron rangers stay dry. I know they can handle the elements but prefer to keep the levels of distress varied so i have a pair to match the occasion.

Nice. Personal insults. I’m happy being an elitist in that case. I strive to own the highest quality, most comfortable, craftsman made boots that I can. Less pairs of better boots. I’d disagree that there is anything pretentious about that.
Buying hard wearing work boots to be afraid of the conditions they were made to handle on the other hand...
Right back at you...Don’t you think calling someone’s purchase choice cheaply made trash is not initially insulting? You can wear any footwear you want. I don’t care. It’s your choice.
This thread was to discuss footwear options to wear with leather jackets. I provided my personal choices and my reasons why I chose them (which I feel are reasonable) Never once did I criticize other people’s threads or choices.
Just because I choose not to wear my more expensive footwear for certain times of the year I get looked down upon and criticized for my choices.
And you call me insulting?

I must say that I’m fully supportive of Radz. I think nobody here is buying high end work boot to wear them like a builder would do, let’s not kid ourselves. For sure not everyone can afford to do that. The comment about Timberland being a piece of thrash I found it quite arrogant and out of touch. They do their job quite well and although there is no hype around them doesn’t mean they are a piece of thrash.

Anyway, back to the boots... here is my pair of Trickers monkey boots I just received today! Looking forward to wearing these :

My only pair of red wings. Wear them for anything, that is what they are for.

And yes even worn in the snow and ice over 10 winters - you will have probably 5-10 pairs of timberlands rotting in a landfill before these finally give up.

I stand by my opinion.

It's not like anyone is arguing (sans you) that a pair of Red Wings are likely a better pair of boots, but the delivery of your message leaves a lot to be desired in this fairly civil parlor. It's not really the kind of place where someone has to feel inadequate posting up a "lesser" <fill in the blank>.

I've mostly felt that this place is where to avoid the general internet filled with ugliness, but lately, there's been couple threads where it seems like every other place, and I'm not interested in that. So carry on, you're arguing with yourself here Gav, and it's unbecoming of you.

I stand by my opinion.

I see engineer style boots getting a lot of love here. Several beautiful examples have been posted lately. I have never owned a pair, but read that they are not great for walking all day and are not designed with that as a priority. Anyone care to comment?
Bfd70,
I have five pairs of engineer boots and I think it really depends on the sole as to how comfortable they are to walk around for long periods in. The Wesco 7400 is my favorite boot because it has a nice smooth vibram sole with a bit of give to them. This boot also has a higher arch than my other Wescos and it fits my foot very well.
I agree with what others have said that lace up boots would be my choice for maximum comfort and support at work (I'm an electrician) or if I was going for a long walk.

After the reaction to Radz's Timberlands, I ought to feel huge trepidation at posting my own cheapo boots. But I'm going ahead anyway because I reckon I can take it.

In a world where Iron Rangers or Wolverine 1000 Milers are near £300, I'm happy to wear these Caterpillar Sequoias that cost me only £60

I know a lot of people diss Caterpillar massively, but I like them and they've always served me well. I wore an older pair of Sequoias for the best part of a decade before flipping them on eBay, but I missed them so much I've bought another pair.

I think they're honest, well put-together and tough like a tank. In the pics I'm wearing them with my Unbranded 21oz.

Skechers...who cares.

I think there's an interesting variety of beliefs here. Does the jacket serve as the ingredient or the center-piece? I personally prefer the rest of my wardrobe looking casual borderlining sloppy, to avoid overpowering my image. I prefer letting the jacket speak for itself in my ensemble. Also, it's simply how I dress. If I had more of an interest in footwear, I'd not care as much about the jacket. I wear my nicer boots usually with a flannel on. It's hard for me to stomach too much quality worn at one time; to me it feels overdone.

No belief is correct and this is pretty subjective, so it's an interesting debate, and like fine art, allows freedom of personal conclusions. That's how it should be!

Really agree with what you’re saying Nick. You raise a lot of good points.

I think wearing a very thick and nice leather jacket with super shiny boots might make you look like you are trying too hard or end up being a little costumy. I prefer to wear a leather jacket with canvas shoes or suede shoes if possible. I don’t wanna end up looking as if I’m wearing all my fine jewellery at once, if that makes sense.

I guess in the end it boils down to the usual story that wearing all high end stuff doesn’t mean you have style. Mixing different textiles i think it’s quite important.

Well, definitely to each his/her own on this one. But to go to the extreme on the last few comments, I'd never wear sneakers with a Tux, and I won't do that often with a $1k+ leather jacket either.
I'd wager that 99% of the people I pass on the street have no clue what my outfit cost me, and therefore, worrying about over-doing is pretty much not a concern.

I can see that for things like watches and jewelry, etc. but not what I consider to be casual, albeit expensive gear. YMMV!!!

One guy sees cars as point A to point B and spends $20,000. Another guy is a "car guy" and spends MUCH more.
Boots, jackets, definitely watches, are all the same. Like what you like. Wear what you want. Give zero f*#ks. Thats the only way to have style.
