I went into an RRL store in New York, and they had really nice vintage jackets, but wow- that price-tag....

This guy is funny, though. So much talk about an old, crusty-ass leather jacket that don't even fit him that well.

This guy is so full of BS. A few quotes:

They both looked great. But they were young, skinny, tall, good looking, and had some swagger to match.
The jackets suited them, worn like that, at that point in their life. I will not say that no one older or larger or more timid couldn’t look great in a Perfecto. I’m sure they could. But at the same time, I suspect those guys won’t dress like that when they’re 40."

Lol, if 40 is the upper limit for wearing perfecto style jackets that means I have only 4 more years left to enjoy my collection.

I think that guy's main fear is the association of the black leather jacket with Marlon Brando in The Wild One and bikers in general or with music stars like the Ramones. He does not want people to look at him and think of those characters. That's not a biker jacket, but, as far as I know, leather jacket of all kinds were used for biking, and the black colour just reinforces the association. I also think that many people, especially older guys, are afraid of that type of connection.

Of course, there's a lot of aged men which look great in all type of leathers (tmitchell59, who is not young nor in super shape, is the first that comes to my mind, but I've seen quite a a few others here), but not many are, let's say, 'brave' enough to try.

Also, many people do not know that leather jackets, even black and MC ones, were worn (and advertised) as purely casual garments, not necessarily work/specialist/military ones. Not everyone knows as much as TFL members about this stuff, and some that do reject this vintage look as too conspicous or cosplay/period. To each their own, I guess.

One thing I do not get is this mid-life crisis thing, though. I think many people who liked leather in their youth just keep wearing it as they age and keep looking good doing it.

The writer himself seems to be in midlife crisis. Whether he wants other people to notice is another matter. The fact that he cares so much about what other thinks of his leather jacket clearly demonstrates lack of confidence.
Enjoying the things one like but could not afford (money and/or time-wise) when one were younger is not exactly midlife crisis.

This all reads like "ok so if you are like me and fear you cannot pull off a black leather jacket, follow these three steps a)no jeans b) no white t-shirt c) no biker jackets"

He is afraid he cannot pull it off and is insecure about what people think about him, that is what in his books is wrong with this look. I mean, good for him, he found a way to include cool leather jackets into his outfits in a way he is comfortable with, but he should probably not mirror his insecurities onto others.
