These odd connections...................... Are they connections at all??? The whips, the Mission buildings/scenes............ are they imitating each other or are these offshoot makers??? Or was it that ALL SF and California were known for at this time are Horse whips and the Missions??? Its intriguing.....

I think it is reasonable to assume they all sorta "knew" each other on the West Coast. Most of the makers made use of "made in California" Palm Trees, Mission scenes, on their labels. The Whole "made in California" was a big enough thing for a lawsuit. The Catalogs each had a way of highlighting the California connection, with the made in..and palm trees.

The Romance of California in popular culture, now and then. CSC had a list of Whos Who in movies as endorsers, Ray Milland, Bob Cummings, Ronald Reagan, Alan Ladd, etc. Hollywood in the 30s and 40s was big time.

The makers and retailers used the California connection to great advantage. I don't recall any major label marketing slogan referring to other parts of the country; mid-west, South, East.

California was seen as a trend setter, even in leather jackets.

The East coast had the same thing going in the Boston, MA area. Makers using the local tanneries. Also making a very different garment than the west coast.

I live in the mid-west and can't quite figure the mid-west style. Maybe more conservative? more workman like?

As is today, people were aware of what was going one from one maker to another. Competivie, no different than today.

I want that collar. Good spot on this one. They all begin to look the same. this is the standard RP police cross zip, 1940s through the 50s.

The civilian motorcycle jackets typically had a attached belt, zip sleeves. Cig pocket zipped. These can also been seen with badge holders, like below. They had one chassis with several models.

Price is 1k asking. What is it worth? I'd give $200 for just that collar in excellent condition. This one looks to be Horsehide, also sold in Steerhide like below.

How many Star Glove, Cal leathers, Trojans, Schotts do you see from the 40s that look this good and what would they sell for?

Tough when a vintage jackets gets in the 1k range, even when they are worth it.

Why don't I buy it you ask? Well, look at the pictures above, I've got a couple.

Would the Buco stuff be an indication? Detroit’s current police design is still the Buco police jacket type.
Certainly Buco would be #1 mid-west, Monarch, Grais, Fried-Ostermann (Albert Richard), Harley, (various makers) Several makers in Minn. Wisconsin, Glover and King of Fur in Iowa.

Yet nothing yet distinguishes this group to me. I see similarities in West coast and East coast, but mid-west I haven't yet got that thought out.
