It looks very snug, did you find it restrictive? I have similar measurements as you, and an ELMC Windward in 44, and it's a very tight fit.

Agree with @Guppy, that looks very snug and restrictive in chest area but way too roomy around waist. Have understood what @Carlos840 meant reviewing this jacket.

True, size 40 was too tight for me in the chest and sleeves were too short. I also tried the 42 but that was way too roomy around the waist. It's a great jacket, but not for me unfortunately. Here's the 42:

Size 42 looks better in shoulders and chest on you but such roomy upper hips area makes me thinking it was possibly initially designed for women, though shoulders might be too wide for women then. Anyway, the pattern looks to have quite strange proportions indeed.

Problem is, I have no hips. I wear jeans size 29 or 30. Still I need a 42 for my chest. I've seen pictures of guys wearing the jacket looking absolutely great. I think this works best if you're hourglass shaped, instead of V-shaped.

I would think the zip jacket is more likely 40s? I am not that familiar when zips made it into civilian jackets? The button do give an air of an earlier jacket

The first zippers mentioned in the Sears catalog is 1931. Most jackets were still pictured with buttons. It takes a couple of years before most jackets have zipped closure. The zip jacket has a later 30s Talon sunrise zipper which were used in the early 40s. I doubt the button jacket pre-dates the zipper. The jacket design looks more late 30s. I have seen Block jackets with an older label, no palm trees or made in California script.
