Seriously, I believe froufrou is slang for "fancy" or overly girlie.
Steve

I think i know what you're talking about now. My friend Erin enlightend me to what froufrou was...by showing me her bedroom. Based on what Steve has said and what Erin showed me. Not my style.

IIRC, primrose yellow and black was the color scheme of Lord Peter Wimsey's library. Complete with the furnishings, it was a very comfortable, masculine room.

Hmm and I am doing a lot of black...maybe... nah I'm pretty sure the '40s-'50s French Provinical furniture is pretty girly. Cream with gold.

I've won a fair amount of pink and white bric-a-brac with rose motifs at rose shows. Most of that stuff stays in a drawer. I didn't like pink frou-frou even when I was a little girl, so I can understand a grown man not really liking it.

I surrendered on this topic. I just let my wife do whatever she wants with regards to interior decoration anywhere in the house. In fact I told her the house is hers.

One day I will buy my own place. No girls allowed!

I may dress cutsie sometimes, but I like my decor to be sleek, classy with a touch of the 4 elements. Besides, for some unknown reason, I like the earthy colors, usually browns, beiges, sages and maroons. Every house I have ever lived in seems to be revolved around that, and patterns like squares or circles. All very monotone and neutral as far as masculine or feminine. So, i guess my man is lucky, because I know someone imparticular out in LA that her house is all Gingham pink, rose buds and mint green, enough to make you puke up a barbie doll LOL But... to each his/her own.

I think a good illustration of what could be called "frou-frou" can be seen in the photograph of the steak house at Madonna's Inn in San Luis Obispo.

There is a particular shade of pink that Mrs. Madonna was very fond of. Even the sugar at the tables is that pink. It is also much less red than how its shows on my monitor.

Y'all are cracking me up! It's going to be a while before I have results, as we have a closet to rip out first! But I'll keep you posted!
I'm going for more a vintage bordello look vs. the doilie dollhouse scene.
I did google image searches just now for bordello room and moulin rouge and it looks like I'm pretty much on track,lol.. some of the rooms were the same color I picked!

Madonna's Inn is quite the place if you want to see oppulance, (for a given value of oppulent). And as noted, there is a fair amount of frou-frou there as well.

Each bedroom has a separate design theme and is decorated thusly. It is a unique place. Mr. Madonna was a road and highway contractor who kept his crews busy building the place during the wet winter months back in the early 1960s. The iron work and wood carving in the bar is pretty fantastic. I also liked that all the stained glass work is of road construction.

I slept in the manly room:p :

That pink is really dark looking. Reminds me of my Aunt Emmas house. She loved lilac so the livingroom was painted that color and it made it very dark.
However my bar in my summer house is painted in a light pink with glitter paint. No one ever said it wasn't manly. ;) :p

The picture makes it look darker than it is.

Ohairas, your post was quite thought provoking. Generally, my wife decorates our bedroom (actually, our entire home) in a manner that she finds pleasurable while taking my comfort into account.

Our home is biased towards the feminine. But it is adult feminine, not little-girlish. That makes a significant difference in that most adult men, I think, love being romantically attracted to their spouses but are not comfortable with little girl things. And that's probably as it shoud be, what with the incest taboo and such.

Once again, thank you for your post. It caused me to ponder an issue I'd never approached before

Cordially,
Gary

jamespowers, I think I'd be a bit freaked out to sleep in a room with a GIANT DISEMBODIED BUFFALO HEAD on the wall. I'm just saying. :p

Also..I don't think the Colony Rose is so girly. Glitter?...wow! Silver..gold..or pink sparkles? Please post a pic when you're done. I gotta see this!:)

Mixing glitter into paint doesn't give you glittery paint. It gives you glitter stuck to your walls and everything covered with the paint. Paint coats the glitter, and it doesn't miraculously know to not stick to the side of the glitter facing the room occupants.

If you want glittler on the surface, it's going to have to be sprayed after the paint's on & dry. And even at that, you're going to have to scrape & sand all the walls & ceiling before you repaint, unless you like a really rough texture to your walls.

I've known way too many friends who've tried this and ended up with a huge repair job...maybe not right away ("Oh honey, we can live with it...") but down the road when they want to sell the house and potential buyers think "Probably gonna have to tear down all that drywall and have it replaced to get rid of THAT mess...Let's look at the next house on the list!"

That picture of the Madonna Inn steakhouse reminds me of what Sally Field said in Steel Magnolias - "That sanctuary looks like it's been hosed down with Pepto-Bismol!"

I happened to glance down just now and notice, just by pure coincidence, I am wearing a Pepto-Bismol colored shirt at this very moment...

Gee, then I am glad I didn't take a picture of the fireplace in the summer house with the Giant Disembodied Corsican Sheep over the mantle.:p
Taxidermied heads on the wall are definitely a man thing. Even in a room that is frou frou, a few animal heads on the wall negate all the frou frou and it is now manly. :p I know a friend of mine that has his entire bedroom walls covered in taxidermy. Would any woman want that in the bedroom as opposed to frou frou? [huh] :D
I slept just fine by the way. I only wish I had the other part of the buffalo for dinner before going to bed. ;) :p

J

For some reason, it does stick to the walls facing out if you remember to stir the paint every few applications to keep the glitter free floating. I could paint over it in a minute without anyone being the wiser. Throwing the stuff on might be a problem though. :eusa_doh:

There are special shimmer particles that you can mix into paint to give it a glittery sheen. I remember seeing it when I was at Lowes not too long ago because I was thinking about doing a glittery sheen. I would say go to a home improvement store or a paint store and see what they suggest. That way you avoid the mishaps.
We have a sitting room off of our bedroom that I want to turn into a dressing room for me. Eventually our bedroom will be a celedon green with a burgandy accent wall but I wanted to paint the sitting room pink since it will be my private dressing room. I asked my husband a month or so what he tought and he said no pink. He said if he came home and found the room pink he would repaint it himself. Oh well, I'll have to sneak it in with the accessories :)
