While a lot of the boots are beautiful, none of them seem to meet all 3 criteria. So I guess it will be the magnums for everyday wear and perhaps one of these other brands for use with a suit.

Thank you all.

It's set in modern day.

Ah, yes. I thought so...

I'm not fixated on that particular style, but in the movie he wears it well with a 3 piece suit as well as jeans and a shirt. I want something equally versatile.

A decent leather brogue boot sounds like the way forward.

Or get a boot that you like and use dubbin. Sure you won't be able to run around in a river wearing them but it'll waterproof them enough for most conditions. Used to use it all the times on rugby boots and worked a treat.

And I'll put in a plug for RM Williams boots. Chelsea boot style and brilliant, you can wear them with everything from a suit to a pair of jeans. And they last forever.

If youl ike that style, I've heard good things about those. Dubbin definitely a good idea.

I'm not so worried about leather damage, as my socks getting wet and freezing for the rest of the day. Some boots I've had the water just seems to seep in through shoelace holes, or perforated holes on the toe or..wherever.

Traditionally, the holes in brogues were intended to let water out in order to speed up the drying.... Given the nature of leather, imo if you want something truly waterproof, you're better off looking for rubber. I'm sure there's somebody could make a boot like this in rubber, but it might not be what you're after!

For general use, a decent leather dress boot with a rubber or Dainite sole should be ideal.

I would trawl ebay for a classic English boot - Loake, Church's, Cheaney etc all make or have made exactly what you're looking for. Other than that, Red Wing Iron Rangers or Beckman 9014s look close. It's worth lashing out on something decent - I'm still rocking a pair of Trickers veldschoen boots that I bought in 1995 as my daily footwear.

Trickers are pricey (new, you'te looking about GBP400 for something along the lines of what the OP wants), but they are truly outstanding. I know folks who swear by them over even Church's.... Though it would be possible to get something nice in the OP's budget too.

Alden Indy is such a classic boot, shame that it hasn't been mentioned yet. Might find a seconds or slightly used model for close to budget.

Yes, price aside, those are lovely. And if I'm correct in my memory, Indy wears them both casually and with a suit too....

Just took receipt of my remake White's SDs today! (Original pair was sized wrong). Can't stress enough how much bang for your buck you get with these...

Nice!

Those look awesome, Breton. Can I ask what the build specs were? Is that there standard brown leather? I wasn't originally a Cuban heel guy, but am starting to dig it.

Of course, the OP said he was looking for a boot he could wear with a suit (occasionally) and the only "suit" these boots would look good with is a Canadian tuxedo.

I think they could be carried off aesthetically - though perhaps not ideal for the sort of 'formal' environment most people associate with suits nowadays.

Somebody Mentioned Redwing Iron Rangers.... I think due to the waxy matte finish on those (at least all I've seen), they might not be suitable for wearing with a suit in a "formal" environment, but The RedWing Beckman, with either plain or moc toe, would be a good choice IMO.

A cheaper alernative might be a pair of repro WW2 Service Shoes (the early war type with smooth leather upper, not the later roughouts). They were, after all, designed to be worn with both Class A dress uniform and in the field of combat...

Aero's own brand boots might be an option, if you can be a little bit flexible with the budget:

http://www.aeroleatherclothing.com/product-detail.php?id=1929 - black, brown or cordovan. Leather sole, but I find any cobbler can fit a stick-on rubber over layer relatively cheaply to leather soles, which deals with any water seepage save in the very wettest of conditions, in my experience.

Otherwise, William Lennon has a nice option:

I like the Aero boots but bought this pair of very similar looking surplus PLA navy boots in stead.

There's already a number of general boot threads: Paddy's big dress boots one; one for cowboy boots; flying boots; etc.

Having a general boot thread could get a little messy. Be like having a leather jackets thread for all and sundry.

Just my 2c worth.

Smitty, that's totally cool with me, makes sense. Though i sometimes enjoy the variety of styles etc captured in threads such as "shoes that look better with age". but regardless, i can completely see your point.

These look similar to the Gosling boots and are within your budget. I am not sure how durable they are and/or if they are water-proved but these certain do not have zippers and can't be slipped on.

These here of the same brand do have zippers

Stacy Adams Madisons are cap toes, which would not be a problem for me, but might not be what the OP is looking for. I like them, but I gather the leather they are made from is not particularly durable. THey should be ok for occasional wear, but probably would not hold up as an everyday boot.

You've got some cracking boots there Breton. I especially like the Oaks trench jobs and the Toys engineers. You won't be caught short in the footwear department!

Here's a pic of my Red Wing 8166. This is an older pic, when they were still pretty new. I'll try to put up a current one, and some of my other boots soon. A bunch of my cowboy boots are already in that thread, but maybe I'll put some of them here too.
