Alright just got off the phone with Parker. My Whippet clone will be steel with a black band. The edge will be bound in black. I think we have come really close with cloning the Bing Crosby hat I posted a few days ago. It should be awesome!

I'm thinking of asking Parker to make me a light weight summer felt hat, I'd like to do a light tan color & haven't decided on a ribbon treatment.

Does anybody have a hat like this I can have Parker model something after? Or can you suggest a vintage light weight hat to use as a guide?

And what do you think of vent holes in the crown? Did any vintage hats have these?

There's a lot of good examples in this thread.

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing! I was pondering white with my typical 4-ligne ribbon, unlined, and perhaps vented at the top.

However, I have a light grey Borsalino, another modern Stratoliner on order in silver belly, and the one I'm getting from Parker is in Bone.

Since Milwaukee (and Chicago) don't get all that hot and humid too often, I'm thinking that those three felts will be fine most days (and nights) and for when it does get ungodly hot, I have a few straws I can wear. Hence, I will try the ones I already own before I get another custom made.

If you look at that Stetson Air-Lightthread, you'll see some hats vented at the top. I've seen some with venting on the sides but I'm thinking I'd rather not want that in a decent hat.

Mike if my hat comes back like that I will be soo happy. That is my vision almost to a T. I think my ribbon will be a tad larger what is the ribbon height on that one?

Has anyone gotten the vintage weight he offers in the Pearl color? From the pic he sent me it looks awfully blue instead of a lighter grey that I'm looking for but I'd like to see some additional pics if anyone has one in that color.

Tom, I think the little vents are a really cool feature on a lightweight hat.

Here's what Art did on my ArtLite

Most 1940/50s Whippets had 18 ligne (1 5/8") ribbons, some 17 ligne (1 1/2"). It's a ribbon width that works for practically everyone.
I dare say that even by today's standard, it's not too conspicuously wide a ribbon for those who are unaccustomed to fedoras of classic dimensions.

The hat in my avatar has a 17 L ribbon.

Just this morning I emailed Parker asking about a Falcon Park Open Road clone in 100% beaver. I hope he can make one for me. I've been looking at Jaxon Built hats, but if Parker can make something for me, I think I'll go with Falcon Park. Sorta reminds me of when I was looking to buy an A-1 flight jacket. People I knew told me I should buy an Aero or an ELC...and they are good jackets, no doubt. But just before I pulled the trigger on something from Scotland, a little one-man operation in Seattle started making A-1s...so I decided to take a chance and go with Goodwear Leather.

That is basically what I'm waiting for, 6" open crown, 2-5/8" (I think) bound brim, wind string, 4-ligne ribbon. Only difference is that mine will have a Borsalino-type bow rather than an Open Road-type bow.

So, I should think so!
