Hey Boyo
Thanks for the suggestion, but there is no Amazonfresh here. There were a couple of small cottage businesses doing grocery delivery, catering to the high end tourist trade, but I can't find any still operating. CVS is going to deliver my meds, and Costco has set up a time really early in the morning when seniors can shop apart from the hoards. I am doing well, and am in good spirits, just not drinking any. I will figure stuff out, thanks for your concern.
Still want to see if I can buy one of these DIY masks from @handymike. :)

Hand soap is effective. Face masks are of little practical use (unless N-95 and properly fitted) if within a metre of coughs, etc., although in HK and around China and Korea people are wearing them. Practical self-isolation and social distancing and avoiding crowded areas are still the best bet at the moment, as well as keeping the immune system up by exercising and eating properly.

Guangzhou central health authorities recommend keeping floors bleached and surfaces wiped down.

Once you've done all that, don favourite jacket, hit Netflix and those novels you never read and pour a shot of scotch.
This today from the New York Times

Make masks ubiquitous

There is very little data showing that flat surgical masks protect healthy individuals from disease. Nonetheless, Asian countries generally make it mandatory that people wear them. The Asian approach is less about data than it is about crowd psychology, experts explained.

All experts agree that the sick must wear masks to keep in their coughs. But if a mask indicates that the wearer is sick, many people will be reluctant to wear one. If everyone is required to wear masks, the sick automatically have one on and there is no stigma attached.

I was trying to upload the official Guangzhou municipal health regulations- by far the most important measures are hand-washing and avoiding crowds.

This article seems like good info on masks.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(20)30134-X/fulltext

Panel: Recommendations on face mask use in community settings
WHO1
• If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection.
China2
if you are in an open-air environment, the use of face mask is not very efficient.
• People at moderate risk* of infection: surgical or disposable mask for medical use.
• People at low risk† of infection: disposable mask for medical use.
• People at very low risk‡ of infection: do not have to wear a mask or can wear non-medical mask (such as cloth mask).
USA6
• Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend that people who are well wear a face mask (including respirators) to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
• US Surgeon General urged people on Twitter to stop buying face masks.
UK7
• Face masks play a very important role in places such as hospitals, but there is very little evidence of widespread benefit for members of the public.
Germany8
• There is not enough evidence to prove that wearing a surgical mask significantly reduces a healthy person’s risk of becoming infected while wearing it. According to WHO, wearing a mask in situations where it is not recommended to do so can create a false sense of security because it might lead to neglecting fundamental hygiene measures, such as proper hand hygiene.
*People at moderate risk of infection include those working in areas of high population density (eg, hospitals, train stations), those have been or live with somebody who is quarantined, and administrative staff, police, security, and couriers whose work is related to COVID-19. †People at low risk of infection include those staying in areas of high population density (eg, supermarket, shopping mall), who work indoors, who seek health care in medical institutions (other than fever clinics), and gatherings of children aged 3–6 years and school students. ‡People at very low risk of infection include those who mostly stay at home, who do outdoor activities, and who work or study in well-ventilated areas.
Hong Kong3
• Surgical masks can prevent transmission of respiratory viruses from people who are ill. It is essential for people who are symptomatic (even if they have mild symptoms) to wear a surgical mask.
• Wear a surgical mask when taking public transport or staying in crowded places. It is important to wear a mask properly and practice good hand hygiene before wearing and after removing a mask.
Singapore4
• Wear a mask if you have respiratory symptoms, such as a cough or runny nose.
Japan5
• The effectiveness of wearing a face mask to protect yourself from contracting viruses is thought to be limited. If you wear a face mask in confined, badly ventilated spaces, it might help avoid catching droplets emitted from others but

Will motorcycle helmet help?

I want a leather mc facemask cut to cover one of the n95 type safety jobs. TBH, I don't much care whether it's effective or not.... I'll hold my hand up and say I'm interested in a mask like that purely because it looks cool, and I'm loving the idea of it being oscially acceptable to cover my face in public.

Agree, also what is the point of wearing a face mask if you are not wearing goggles?

Less risk of absroption through the eyes, though, surely. I was al keen on buying a full-on gasmask that takes those 40mm NATO filters, but finding one that isn't overkill moneywise at this stage *and* that can accomodate my glasses is even harder than finding a motorcycle helmet that isn't a apin with glasses!

Makes perfect sense. Of course, enforcing it in a culture more prone to the cult of the individual than thinking of the collective is gonig to be a challenge. Worth trying, though.

This is the facemask recommendation from the US CDC for healthcare professionals (HCP) where no masks are available:

HCP use of homemade masks:
In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.

I saw a YouTube clip on making masks out of bra cups......don't do it unless you clear it with the wife first.....apparently she was still using the bra.....one of her favourites…...she will forgive me...….eventually.

What is the common thing in all the countries that stopped the virus (China, Japan, S. Korea)? Their populations wear masks (and track infections diligently, of course). 80-90% of virus carriers are asymptomatic, and masks prevent them from spreading the virus. Unfortunately Europe and US don't do that, and are paying a heavy price.
