eBay.UK ditched men's 'period' catergories ?!!

Baron, 'disaster' is exactly the word i've been using about it too.

Methuselah, i don't follow your last post. if you go to vintage clothing and accessories>women's>search results, the period menu is still there in the left column and works fine. in the men's it has gone completely and only returns if you search '1940s' or another date.

i got a strange reply from ebay customer help when i asked them if there had been a glitch. quote:

"...vintage categories have not being removed from the site. From what you have said it seems that clearing out your web browser's cache and cookies might solve the problem. In case you've never heard these terms before, I'll give you a quick explanation.

- "Cookies" are small files that websites you visit will store on your computer.

- Your "cache" is the local storage where copies of images and web pages are kept on your computer's hard disk (or in its memory).

eBay, like most websites, uses cookies. Sometimes, too many outdated eBay cookies on your computer can cause you to have problems looking at our site. So it is a good idea to delete them every so often. Please be assured that this won't harm your computer.

When your cache gets full pages may load slowly or not at all. I've included instructions below on how to clear your cookies and cache. This should help correct the problems you're experiencing."

In other words, they've noted that it was a bad decision, the flunky responsible is gone, and normal service will be resumed asap. And they can say to everyone whose computers have "too may outdated eBay cookies": well, it was your error, we didn't change anyfink. honest guvnor.

Well, I have my browser set to not accept cookies, and I can't see the categories. Hmmmmmmm …

But it was never necessary, as a seller, to add a period descriptor/tag. There was a separate category for each period. From the point of view of seller and buyer (I am both) the old system ascertained more purchases and easier sales (I think).

All eBay's changes do is make one wade through endless garbage as a buyer in the grand overarching "men's vintage" supercategory. I never search for anything; I look through the whole of each period category. From what I can tell from speaking to other, for want of a better term, "serious" collectors, this is the way they do it too. You never know what people might be listing! I can still do this but they've just made it a bit harder. Good-bye, eBay UK. All my high end stuff that makes you shedloads of fees is gone elsewhere.

The category itself has been removed, only the filter for the period 'tag' is still present. This works in the same way as Colour, Condition, Material etc.

Example, if I choose the 1940s period, the breadcrumb trail at the top of the page still reads:
Home >Buy >Clothes, Shoes & Accessories >Vintage Clothing & Accessories >Women's >Search results

This period filter is also available in men's clothing, it just doesn't show by default.

I think a weakness in this system is that a lot of (most?) sellers don't bother to complete all the descriptive tags. Example:
Women's vintage clothing has 38,973 items at the time of writing. Period is 'Not Specified' for 26,341 items.
