i hope my eyes are deceiving me but UK ebay seems to have ditched all of the period categories for men's vintage clothing, meaning everything is now under one category of 'men's' with no 1930s, 1940s etc.

someone please tell me there's been a silly mistake, or i'm just having browser problems.

agreed,

all i had to do before was click a bookmarked toolbar link and i'd see the newly listed items in 1930s or 1940s for each day. now, unless i want to wade through 20 + pages of mixed period new items, i have to do random searches !

this is a disaster for vintage buyers AND Sellers !

I was always irritated by the period categories, because I couldn't search multiple decades at once. I had to open each decade in a seperate tab, and search within them (except every now and then I could specify 20s and 30s and 40s, ties, suits, etc, but I never figured out how to get that all the time).

I would regularly browse the 30s, 40s and 50s categories (found a couple of nice 50s bits, despite the category being choked with shapeless, oversized, printed T shirts that somebody has decided are "rockabilly" ). Sometimes it let me select all three at once, sometimes not. Last I looked was yesterday and they were still there.... does this mean they've abandoned it? Bah. Maybe this is part of their drive to shift the focus entirely onto bulk sellers of new goods... Shame nothing has really caught up with eBay's marketplace as of yet. I know Etsi exists, but it's not quite the same.

I ended up deciding it was better to search them all together anyway, after I won a suit advertised as 1960s that had a tag hidden in the rear trouser seam with 1946 on it lol

Heh, that's very true, Edward!

Yes, I also noticed this today and, likewise, am hoping that it's just a temporary glitch. Several years ago, the vinyl records sub-cats got reshuffled/disappeared and that was a real pain... it affects all of your saved searches, too...

There is that, though it does mean having to wade through pages and pages of 80s "vintage" tat.....

And now that it's 2010, soon "2000s" will be a category, if they haven't completely gotten rid of them.

update: if you search '1940s' in the new all encompassing 'mens' category the period categories magically re-appear in the 'refine search' column on the left.... so you can then pick say... '1980s' to search for '1940s' in, which is a um, novel idea.

i'm going to contact eBay and see what they have to say.

I actually contacted them about this a couple of months back, when it kept coming and going (as the rest of you have noted). I couldn't get them to understand what I meant and gave up. Hope one of you has better luck as it's pretty essential that this function works I think.

unbelievable level of ineptitude. notice that in Methuselah's link above it states that the women's categories have 'expired' when they're still currently operating (but for how long ladies ?)... just think: someone at ebay is payed to do this job !

thanks ebay.co.uk, it was fun while it lasted. if i have anything to sell i'll go to ebay.com instead.

as for buying, anyone know of a good dedicated vintage clothing auction site ?

The category itself has been removed, only the filter for the period 'tag' is still present. This works in the same way as Colour, Condition, Material etc.

Example, if I choose the 1940s period, the breadcrumb trail at the top of the page still reads:
Home >Buy >Clothes, Shoes & Accessories >Vintage Clothing & Accessories >Women's >Search results

This period filter is also available in men's clothing, it just doesn't show by default.

I think a weakness in this system is that a lot of (most?) sellers don't bother to complete all the descriptive tags. Example:
Women's vintage clothing has 38,973 items at the time of writing. Period is 'Not Specified' for 26,341 items. :(

For people like me, who are not looking for anything in particular other than great vintage at a good price, the removal of period categories is a disaster. I know I can just search for "1940s" and get into the 1940s category, remove my search descriptor and search 1940s category for "blank", thereby seeing everything in the category … but I just don't think i'll go through all that hassle.
