I like Whippets, but I like the insane money they go for even better ;)
That’s a hat worth the effort of repairing and saving.

Here's an eBay Stetson 4X Beaver I just got. It has the tall "Rancher" crown and a 3 1/2" brim. The seller said it belonged to his father, who was from Kansas and was a country-western dancer in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. I don't like Cattleman crowns, and so I think I'm going to re-crease it into a "Gus." I will also be putting a twisted rawhide hatband on it.

I was thinking that would a fun and rewarding refurb. Not sure what to do about the split in the brim.
Definitely not as easy to hide the repair in the brim as it would be in the crown. Also I imagine the grey felt will likely show it more than a darker felt. But I’m thinking of roughing out the felt on the edges of the tear and using a small amount of glue and pressing together. Maybe a bit of sanding after? I did something similar on a black Dunlap I had. But that was in the rear of the crown and obviously dark felt.

I figure in this case it will likely show some battle scars no matter what is done…. so goal would really be to repair to avoid worsening of the tear.

Haven’t decided which glue to try this time.

When repairing moth nibbles I use a light spray glue (craft store like Michaels). I spray it on a piece of cardboard then use a toothpick to apply really small amounts of the glue to the hole. I agree the first step with the tear would be to stop the spread. I like you idea of a bit of sanding, a light application of glue. Perhaps then some felt scrapings from inside the crown glued and tamped into the tear to lessen its noticeability. Much like a moth repair. And yes moth repairs on a light coloured felt are so much harder to hide.

Thanks Robert.. I think it is your idea with the glue and toothpick I had in the back of my mind. The toothpick might help rough up the fibers on the edge of the tear to get them to mesh up some
