Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Won this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/380722597957?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 but the seller didn't think it would matter that the hat still had stitching in it where a sweat had been sewn in & removed plus glue residue where a liner had been installed & removed. He did refund half my total purchase price.

My gripe with ebay was that I could have shipped it back & gotten a full refund of my purchase price & shipping. Why should I have to pay $8-10 shipping cost to send it back? The seller would be out nothing but the effort to ship where I'd be out that effort plus shipping costs because it was not described properly to start = not my error. Makes no sense. Truly buyer beware...

Maybe a little too fast trigger-finger. I have read lots of very good reviews by other Loungers - also when a hat didn't fit. 15.000 sells and 100% positive feedback doesn't really paint a picture of a crook, either.

Furthermore the stitches are quite clearly visible in the pics in the posting. I would also have wondered about the spots, visible inside the crown. I'm sure I would have messaged the seller and asked about these things. As buyer I would have accepted, I didn't do my job well enough. But again, that's just my two cents :)

& well worth the price....Unfinished does not mean torn down in any way shape or form. Partially refinished maybe. You must have a much nicer monitor than I do. I gave a guy who bought out a hat factory more credit than I should've but nothing more...

I don't think it's Ole's monitor. Download the auction pics, view them in a proper image viewer, blow-up if necessary.
Yea, I do that for every less than $25 purchase. Still does not address having to pay the return shipping to get the refund. What button or feature does that?

Before I get more ebay buying tips because I am so new to that & unsuccessful at it too, the only opinion about the product mis-description that I care about has already agreed with me & offered a full refund. Whether I could've/should've done this or that is irrelevant as that was the "set up" to get to the "gripe" portion of my post = buyers have to pay to ship back something a seller admittedly made an error on to get a full refund & is out that money. I have no problem if the seller did NOT make a mistake to have to send it back to a gracious seller willing to take a return.
Now, this gripe is over & my ignore list gets longer...

I agree.....

The penalty is more of a deterrent against returning items and a seller protection against buyers remorse setting in and buyers wanting to return items without just cause.

IMO..if seller agrees they made an error or misleading listing and will refund full price. The the seller should, out of good customer service, pay for return shipping or at the very least offer to pay half of return shipping.

Out of good customer service? I think you mistake ebay for a regular business venture. Most sellers are just people, not "a business." They pay no mind to sensible business practices.

I think it is a pain to have to pay return postage. When I've had disputes I've usually settled for a partial refund while I keep the item. But I've had all sorts of solutions to issues.

-Some refund without asking for the item back
-Some give partial refund without asking for the item back
-Some won't offer anything without getting the item back and won't pay return postage
-Some have paid my return postage along with a full refund

However, I think you make a good point that making the buyer pay return postage might help keep too many people from returning items without good cause. That is a good point, for sure.

Yep, but some are businesses using ebay as another outlet to brick & mortar or catalog.
I have had all forms of refunds with 1 seller sending the wrong model telling me to keep it & sending me the exact same wrong model only to refund totally. I had 2 wrong items for nothing!
I too often offer to keep an item for a partial refund because I wouldn't have paid that price for what I actually received.
To me, ebay should be like a catalog order. I usually get a return label with my package from most of the catalogs I order from.
I buy mail order boots all the time for free shipping with free return.
As long as I try them on on carpet & don't scuff the soles, I can send them back if not satisfied.
Also, if you go buy out a business' stock to sell off, you should expect to act like a business even if you're using ebay....

No, not mistaking ebay for a business venture although ebay IS a business venture. Some sellers on ebay do not have a legal business although most of these people rarely register and put items on ebay ONE time.
I have sold some things on ebay. Not with a business. However, I considered my "customer service" to be simply acting in a fair and considerate manner towards anyone that bought anything from me or just inquired about an item. It's simply being considerate while dealing with another person and being responsible when one makes an error or even has a part in an error or misleading someone else.

You know....do unto others as you would have them do to you....

Maybe just out of date thinking....but, it's my opinion and what I personally believe when dealing with others.

Another problem is that if you return an item (getting original cost refunded but paying the return shipping), you can't leave feedback to warn other buyers. The sale just disappears.

Don't know how you ID'd this as a Brent Black, based on what I see in the post, but maybe I missed something. The picture is not good, but it still looks like a very high quality Ecuadorian "Panama." Brent Black negotiates directly with the weavers and pays them well, so he gets first choice for hat blanks from the best weavers. I would say you did very well indeed. He just doesn't make any bad hats. If this is as tight a weave as it appears to be, $1,000.00 retail is probably right, but "retail" doesn't really describe BB accurately. He is to Panama hats what Art Fawcett & a few others are to felts.
