Can someone help me decode the numbers on this hatblock?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...akeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en

I've been thinking I need a hatblock, and a 6 7/8 I would be able to use without taking the sweat out (I'm a size 7). Can't tell from the pictures how much taper there is in the block, but the seller says it measures 22" at the bottom and 20" at the top?

I know #52 is the coveted straight sided block and this appears to be a #37.

Anybody?

Yes, it would be good if hats came back, but then again, I'm enjoying the reduced competition for these last remaining gems from the golden era.

It would be boring if everyone wore hats again - we'd all have to find some other way to be different :D

Congrats on your eBay finds - I love getting a super deal, makes up for the times I've paid too much!

You sure got a better deal than I did! I can't believe I paid so much for a Homburg. It had better be special!

The price is high, but not stratospheric. We can't come up with a bargain on every purchase and hopefully this one will prove to be an exciting find. The elegant Hamptons can be excellent breeding ground for vintage and you have the great store imprint from John David/New York City on the sweatband. Looking forward to hearing and seeing more when you receive it.

Westhampton Beach (the seller's location) is the westernmost of Long Island's elegant beach communities known collectively as The Hamptons. Very fertile ground for thrift stores.

You see, these are exactly the kinds of things I hoped he would answer me with. Even if he had told me what you just said in your last post---even that would have sufficed. But he had nothing to say, except " I feel that this is a reasonable price". I don't trust the feelings of novices selling vintage hats on Ebay!

I'm pleased to report that for once, a moth hole turned out to be much less prominent than originally displayed in the ePrey offering. This Disney Long Oval 7 3/8 looked iffy, and when no one else was biting, I wondered if I had done the right $35 thing. After a little brushing, the less-than obvious edge-bite marks are below:

You guys won't believe this. There was no size tag in the hat and he assumed it was a 7 3/8 since all of the other hats at the estate sale were. He sent me a message (thank goodness) before shipping to make sure of the size, saying the circumference measured to 22"! I immediately responded asking him to reimburse me. He said he would.

That's a shame JB but maybe for the best. There are a lot of decent Hommies out there for reasonable prices.

So that comment referred to the previously debated Hamptonian?! Somehow I missed the continuity in that discussion ... OK, thanks for the clarification.

Sorry Z. I hastily wrote that post and was thinking I was omitting too much for someone new to the topic. Glad you figured it out.

Btw, the guy has yet to reimburse me and I'm getting a little nervous.
