I have a strange bias against hats without liners. I can't explain why, but when I see a hat without a liner it just screams "incomplete" to me, as if the hat is half finished. I know, I know, many air-lite hats are made without liners. Maybe it just says "cheap" to me and I don't like being a cheap guy. But, it is just one of my vague "feelings" about hats. We all have what a hat "is" in our mind's eye and a liner makes it a full fedora to me. Can't explain why, though. It just is.

Whippet sold as a 7-1/8 but is really a 7-1/4 goes for $171 smackaroos.

This fits the general price range I'be been seeing for Whippets over the last few months.

6-7/8 and smaller have usually been under $90
7 to 7-1/8 rarely get more than $160
7-1/4 go for near $200.
Larger than that can get to close to $300.

There have been a few here and there that have broken this pattern, but the pattern seems fairly stable for at least the last six months.

I think I might have made a mistake on this Dunlap beaver top hat. It was in my watch list, sat down to see I only had a few seconds left to bid. Saw it was a little rough around the edges, but figured it was worth the opening bid at leas. As soon as I hit bid, THEN I noticed there is no sweatband in it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/180745127199

I'm not sure what's involved in putting a sweat in a hat like this, but I know I'll not be likely to be able to source a nice wide sweat like it would have originally had. Ah well that's what I get for getting caught up in last minute bidding thing.

I'm not sure what's involved in putting a sweat in a hat like this, but I know I'll not be likely to be able to source a nice wide sweat like it would have originally had.

I hate to be a nay sayer, but my guess is that that particular hat is too old and fragile to sew a new leather sweatband into (often they were unreeded and about 2 inches tall, btw). Top hats don't have the flexibility that fedoras have. They are very stiff and the older they get the more fragile they get.

I hope you find otherwise, but my guess would be that it is not a candidate for a new sweatband to be sewed into it.

Isn't this a Lounger? But I don't think the ad is being run by a lounger. Plus the auction is confusing. It also shows a photo of a pith helmet, but the auction is not for a pith helmut.

Looks to me like you did very well. Excellent hat in an unusually large size (hope it's your size).
Might need a bit of cleaning, might not.

Congrats Jeff! Thats a great price and looks like the felt is still pretty nice.

yeah I know I'm not likely to find a wide sweat of the type that would have been sewn into a hat like this, and I'm quite unsure about wether I'll be able to sew a modern reeded sweat into it. I'm hopeful, but I have my doubts.
