Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I just bought this Gelot for $125. The other one I had my eye on is a Homburg, and is being offered at twice the price, so I am very happy
All of the new ones are nice catches, Max, but this one caught my eye especially. These Gelot hats are quite rare. Never found one in vintage shops or local auctions here and the ones on Ebay France are both expensive and few. Will be interesting to hear how it holds up.

Did you ask them to confirm the size? It was listed as 7-1/8 but there were no pics that verified that to be true. I put this on my watch list last night and poof...it was gone this morning. Mysteriously the format had changed to BIN too. ;)

I am wondering how is it possible to win an action with your max bid seconds before it ends and with a big gap from the previous bid? Thought it always works as 0.5-1$ more than the next higher bid...

It should have only incremented to the next highest value and not your max. If you go into the bid history and then select to show all automatic bids do you still see the same large gap?

Thanks Jonathan, appreciate it! It seems that a second before me someone bidded 1$ less than me...pfff I need to stay out of that sport soon....last one, is it often that sellers cancel the auction upon request?

What you've been experiencing with the maximum bids are sniping services.
I use Gixen.com and put in my maximum bid and forget it. If I win, great and if I don't there are plenty of others out there no matter what the item is.

For cancelling the item someone most likely wrote and asked what the Buy It Now price would be and it was sold that way. I did that last night when I (famous last words) bought my last hat which completed the collection.
Now I found one on Facebook Marketplace that I wrote to the seller about...

OK, so it sounds like a lag/refresh issue given you were probably both bidding at essentially the same time. Think of it this way. That's the best dollar you've ever spent. ;)

As to cancelling auctions, I guess it depends on your definition of "often." If you're considering the entirety of all auctions that occur then I would speculate that it's a very small microscopic percentage. That being said, it does occur with relative frequency. I can only chuckle when the "error in listing" is given as the reason why the seller cancelled the auction. Sometimes it's genuinely legitimate, others...not so much. Side deals are known to happen.

Among the many things I have learned at the Lounge, I have learned to keep my cards close to the chest around here.

Not a dig against anybody, but I have experienced some greasy moves in the past.

Agreed about mums the word given the competition, but on the same token I just roll with it. If I ever become so attached to an object that I feel like I have to have it then I personally need to reevaluate my priorities in life. Again, I'm only speaking about me personally.

And just so I'm explicitly clear, I was only teasing around with Max. Yes, we have the same head size so at times we go for the same hats. But I do believe there are enough to go around for all. He's happy with his collection and I'm happy with mine. :)

Thanks for the info guys!
Jonathan I honestly appreciate your input.
As regards to collecting some of us enjoy the procedure (hunting) equally or even more than the object itself, hat, watch you name it. In any case it's just an object... With that being said, Max should sell me these MacLachlan he has in my size ;)

I'm with you and that's how I see it, but to some a hat is worth more than a friendship. I did learned that the hard way. Like you, if that's their priority in life, I don't want them or need them around me, but that's me :)

It goes the other way too. Not a week goes by without at least a couple of members pointing out hats that they think I might be interested in. Some of us in my size even ask if the other(s) are going to bid and then step aside for them. I personally see this side much more frequently than the cutthroat side. Add to that the number of hats that are gifted or sold way below market and I’m often humbled to be in such generous company.

Sure thing Brent, I'm sure that has been your experience and I'm happy for you. I was sharing my experience because it does happen.

I'm not naive, every forum has a click, a members only club, that's a fact of internet forums, and I have been part of those, but I would never stab somebody in the back over a hat, a watch, a guitar, etc.

At the end of the day, all I care or get out of this is the friendships I make, everything else is just academic.

When a member attempts to embarrass another member, while not knowing the facts and it doesn't apologize for it, that's not what I expect from a "gentleman". When a member cuts a side deal behind your back after you ask them for an opinion, that's not my definition of a gentleman.

Again, a hat is not that important to me, but to each its own.

With this I'll finish threadjacking.
