Hi Brad,

Here is the manufacturing label for the Wanderer. Went to compare to the other Dunlap Wanderer but the auction photos are already gone. Running out of town for a few days... will share additional photos of the hat when I return. Feels like a late 40s - 1950 hat... a more substantial felt than some of the other examples I've had in this genre.

Alan, please add it to the -> DUNLAP DRIVE IN

Thanks,
B

Thanks, Alan. Okay, Forties label, no earlier than 1939 thanks to the patent number. The Fifties factory labels show up early, by 1952. Most of the '40s size tags I've seen are the white ones, but it looks like the brown oval one could show up maybe late-'40s? I think you're spot on thinking this is within a year or so of 1950, though it could go as early as '45 or so. Another nuance to dating that We have yet to figure out.

Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge, Brad. Will clean it up and post more photos and a comparison with the Disney Gadabout when I return from my travels next week.

To update what eBay has decided, they are going to take sides with the sellers! The delivered confirmation (as of right now) over rules what we can say as buyers. Sadly the post office will not give out information to me as I am not the one sending the item, so I have no privilege to anything at all, and they will just not extend themselves into "playing detective" as they called it on our behalf.

I have no fears as far as anything I would (or my Wife) would purchase from a fellow lounger, but as of now, if it is from anyone on eBay NOT from the FL, a delivery confirmation that has to be "signed for" and other detailed personal information is going to be a must have, or it will be a "no deal". As it is, my Wife is out $570.00 due to bogus sellers pulling this scam.

I can only presume that what ever the sellers have showing a "delivery confirmation" was perhaps a envelope addressed to any address within our current zip code.

So sorry for you both. Leave it to eBay, eh?

Perhaps you could enlist the assistance of some local talent to track down the perps and show them your metal-studded boots! That way, they could Feel Your Pain. Grrrrrrrr.

Terrible policy-making from eBay.

.

$570.00 would make me a lot more than just pissed off.

I think it is the Post office's job to play detective on your behalf. When it involves possible fraud and scams using the USPS.

If it was me, I would not let it go.....That's too much money. and, if it is a scam...there are others out there.

Sometimes the laws protect the wrong people.

Sad to hear it wasn't handled better by ebay.

Sorry to hear that---definitely stinks! :rage:

What about putting in a credit card claim? Might not work, but worth a try--I assume you use a credit card with your pay pal account.

Will ebay let you leave negative feedback for this---I assume so, but maybe if they side with the seller they would remove it. Doesn't compensate for the financial loss of course....

If you want to get the sellers address and real name (in case you don't have that from the transaction record) you might try having someone else buy something they are selling cheap enough such that the loss risk would be low and presumably they would in fact ship---assuming this is a well established seller that intends to try and stay in business of course. Then you would have that info and could do whatever you deem appropriate---if you know what I mean :boom::kick: <insert evil laugh sound here>

Assuming it doesn't violate the policies of the Lounge maybe you could list the ebay id as well so we can all know who to avoid....

Has anyone received any emails from paypal lately about changes in their dispute process? Looks like these take effect soon.

I know what you mean but even if it legally does constitute "mail fraud" there is the unfair reality that many things don't get prosecuted anymore unless large sums of money are involved--like tens of thousands of dollars or more! Criminals know that too often and use it to their advantage.

Maybe if this crooks does it to enough USPS will get involved.

I wonder if ebay eventually got enough complaints against the seller they would do something or assuming an action isn't too far in the past they could eventually reverse judgement and refund people. Probably not likely but who knows....

I suppose theoretically if the seller was close enough to travel to, that is make it cost effective given the loss amount, and assuming there isn't something in the ebay contract that doesn't prevent a lawsuit (I have doubts that isn't in the fine print somewhere---time to go back and read that fine print) a small claims case would be a long-shot option. Would probably all hinge on if the seller couldn't show they did in fact ship it to the buyer as to how the judge might rule. Not even sure you could put into the sellers venue, but if you couldn't then getting a judgement enforced is, I'm guessing, probably impossible, or at least incredibly difficult.

There's a syndicated radio talk show hosted by a lawyer in CA called "Handel on the Law" (it's on the web) and I've heard him joke about sometimes it would just be easier to kill the person who has shafted someone---he's obviously joking--I have to wonder how he gets away with that....he's been on-air for years. Sadly he is probably correct!

I agree I would try more options before dropping it. One has to decide how many hours and additional money to spend on this before it no longer makes sense. Crooks also count on that...

Daniel,

I'm really sorry to hear about your problems. I would think since the funds involved are over $500.00 that the USPS Inspectors would get involved. That is a significant amount of money and there is no telling how many other people they have scammed. I don't know how you go about it but I would talk to a postal inspector and not just the local postman. Good luck with it.

I have lost two purchased items by way of the USPS. Both items were shown to have be delivered to my local post office. I filed complaints from local all the way up to the USPS inspector generals office and my local senator. The bottom line is , they are not reasonable for anything they do -or don't do. (what a gig). With that in mind I can't see them being concerned.

I'm sure the USPS does have a good delivery rate when considered as a percentage of the number of pieces they deliver.

However, I'm just as sure that lost mail and botched deliveries occur far more than people know.

I'm sorry for your loss and frustration... But I am having a hard time understanding the scam from your description of the event. I hope you used a credit card as the funding source for your PayPal payment. It should provide additional protection.

CaramelSmoothie,

Great find. I've been trying to find one of those in that size for quite awhile. I hope it works well for you.

Oops, I read the auction too quickly. I thought is was a size 7 3/8. Apparently it is smaller. Still a great find for you though.

I have to say, I am a bit sketchy on this ebay scam, too.

Are you saying that the seller takes your $$, but then doesn't send the item and instead just sends an empty envelope to any address in your zipcode and then, when they get a USPS delivery notice, they claim they sent you the item and you are the one lying about never having received it?

Seems to me that is the sort of mail fraud that the USPS should be interested in.

Hi Dan
When purchasing an expensive item it would of been wise to communicate with the seller. Also what type of feedback history did the seller have? I feel your pain about being robbed, please post the sellers name and info here so that folks can avoid this seller.
Have you tried working with paypal or ebay on a refund ?
Best regards

Two old ones turned into military hats? One is an old Echter Borsalino (very interesting bow and tip patch) but not sure about the make of the other one. Tough to date these. My guess is the 1930s but they could be older. Kills me that someone punched crude holes into the Echter Borsalino sweatband. I was able to get the seller to check for paper labels and both are 5 1/2 Point. They look to be in decent shape except for the hack job on the sweat band. I actually like these strange finds. :)
