"Dressing Down" a Homburg

another argument...

that the recent upsurge in hats is telling us is that perhaps we all tend to under-dress, and that instead of trying to match hats to our casual clothes, we might also want to wear suits, sport jackets, slacks, etc. more often to reflect the hats we wear. the phrase "Dress to the Hat" comes to mind.

just a contrary thought!

I've never considered dressing to a hat, only having a nicer hat to wear when I have wear dressier clothes. I'm in Wranglers & Ropers almost exclusively & most of my hats are "country" style, thin ribbons. Some are in better shape & get called to duty when I have to suit up.

I agree fully, and I've been changing my wardrobe to reflect that attitude. I just wasn't so sure a sport jacket would cut it for a homburg. But I'm going to try it today.

I often wear my Optimo Monticristo homburg with a red Hawaiian (aloha) shirt. The color of the ribbon is a perfect match to the shirt.

I also wear it with khakis and a blue blazer. Amazing combination!

That sounds like a great combo, especially with the blue blazer. Some people can pull off a straw (or white/cream felt) homburg quite well. I tried one on last year... I looked like a white jewish guy suffering from head trauma, believing himself to be a black gangsta pimp. So, not a good look for me. lol

On another note, I wore my homburg today in casual mode to run errands and such. And I actually had time to get a couple of pics before leaving!

That works for you, NB13. Throw a silk scarf around your neck and rake that Homburg to the side and you're ready for an evening at the local bistro.

This all works whether dressed up or not. Bottom line for me is: Whgether I am going to Park Ave or a park bench I have to be comfotable with my mode of dress ... together with my hat.;)

NB-13 works great:eusa_clap

Slim looks totally sharp:eusa_clap :eusa_clap

Hi,

I would say NB13 and Slim are demonstrating how the homburg can fit well with both dressy and casual clothing. So, do whatever you fancy.

Regards!

Firstly, I'd get that "today's standards" out of your head because for hats there no longer are any standards. Hats have been out of fashion for enough decades (like 5 or 6, even) that "standards" on how and with what they should be worn are out the window. Wear it however and with whatever you personally thinks looks good. About the only hat I don't think people can "make work" with just about anything these days is a top hat. So, enjoy your hat. As for me, I never wear a homburg because I just don't think I look good in them. Same for any hat under a 2-1/4 inch brim.

I purchased a Homburg as one of my first hats and then shelved it as it seemed too "formal" and I just don't wear suits any longer.
But I pulled it out yesterday to revisit and I love the hat so have decided to begin wearing it. I intend to create a new look (for me) by wearing it with very casual clothing......jeans, boots and a leather jacket. Didn't Homburgs waaaay back in the day represent just an everyday hat, a working man's hat? I intend to take it back to that era in my personal style and have ordered a black one so my grey one is not alone. I like the adding a feather idea to dress it down a tad.
