Apparently it was a toss-up between Alexander Graham Bell who wanted the telephone greeting to be "ahoy" and Thomas Edison who wanted it to be "hello"

I suppose if it was Ahoy, we would be just as used to it as we are with hello

That is too funny. Yeah, ahoy just doesn't sound right. Of course hello might not have, if it had worked out the other way...
