It is just frustrating sometimes living where I do because the only way to get hats really is online.

Honestly, I don't think it's nearly as much of a disadvantage as you seem to believe. Most of us live a good distance away from hat stores. I for one have never been to a hat store, and while I'd like to go, the internet doesn't inhibit me. Not to mention the fact that most of the major hat stores these days (custom hatters excluded) don't really sell very good hats anyway. Frankly, the internet is now the greatest hat store in the world. -M

I disagree and agree with you at the same time. Hat shopping is fantastic; there are tons of sites and many quality hats. My problem is the trying on of different styles. I am flirted with the idea of Homburgs but dont want to waste 100 bucks. Will a 2 3/4 brim look good on me? Who the hell knows because I can' try one on! Stuff like that my friend.

My very first real hat (2007) was a Beaver Brand, heritage grade felt in dark brown, 2 3/8 brim, bound edge. Nice hat-

A couple of years ago thefedorastore picked up on some overstock all-beaver thin ribbons, and I picked this up for $265 (I think)

Beaver Brand makes nice hats, about as good as you are going to find for factory-made, and their ability to process some customization (within limits) makes them special compared to the other factory production hats. I also have hats made by Art, Major Moore, and a number of vintage hats. They are all good . . .

Well, that's why it's a good thing you're going custom. With a lot of custom hatters, you can send them pictures of yourself and they will give you advice on what would suit you. That's what I did when I got my first VS from Art. I was really eager to go for the Jazzman, but he gently guided me to the conclusion that it might be just a bit too tall for me to pull off without the suits and the overcoats of the golden era. I ended up buying a hat that was like the Jazzman, but proportionally just a little smaller and in his "Blue Smoke" color. -M

Ok well sorry for my ignorance, so is that rabbit fur I am handling then? If so I like the quality and would have no qualms using that for my custom fit

No need to fret...they don't make it easy on us consumers. Rabbit & rabbit/hare mix are great felts & have been for years.
Beaver just tends to "felt" better because of the nature of the fur fibers = they continue to bind & can bind tighter cause of the barbs.

We are fortunate to have some hatters delivering good prices for beaver & beaver blend customs.
I got quoted a 100% western custom starting at $800, blends started at $600. These are from Winchester Hat Company felt bodies.

I have a beaver Brand "Classic" that has a safari brim and a C Crown that I picked up at the Charleston (SC) hat store this past summer. It is a very nice hat and this model is made exclusively for that hat store. I guess Beaver Brand does that from what searches I have found on the web for different hat companys.
