Custom made hats from thefedorastore?

... The only fur felt hats I have is a beaver fur stetson. I have never handled rabbit fur. Is it of good quality? Does it blow away wool felt? Again any help is appreciated.

Are you certain that Stetson you reference is actually beaver fur? That word (beaver) gets tossed around so much in the hat industry that unless it is explicitly stated that a particular hat body contains a specific percentage of actual beaver fur, I'd wager that in reality it contains very little if any at all.

My guess is you have indeed handled rabbit fur, as that's what most fur felt hats are made of -- mostly if not entirely rabbit (or hare, in some cases). But then, there's rabbit (and hare), and then there's rabbit. Some are far nicer than others. Million upon millions of very, very nice hats have been made from it, and millions and millions of lesser hats have as well. The starting material is very important, of course, but there's a slew of little and not so little things along the road to a finished product that make for a better or lesser hat. Consider Akubra hats, as an example. Lots of our contemporaries here appreciate them for their styles and overall value for the money, but the "hand" is nothing to get excited about. Indeed, they're more than a bit on the rough side, or so my limited experience with them would indicate. Some guys here address that by giving them a good aftermarket pouncing (sandpapering).

Among the advantages of beaver is that it can yield a much nicer finish than can generally be gotten out of a "staple" (rabbit) hat body. That's more important to some people than others, of course, but in a side-by-side comparison, with all other factors being as equal as they reasonably can be, the difference is obvious.

Thanks guys so much for the help. I never considered a wool hat just curious if bunny fur was better. I am now fairly certain that bunny fur is the way to go for my price range. Now I just have to sit patiently and wait for some cash so I can contact falcon park :)

I had actually emailed him recently and he stated that the current production time is around 8 weeks. I figured this included the wait time.

Production time & wait time are 2 different things in my book. Production time is how long, once started, a hat takes to make. Wait time is how long you have to wait for the hat to start production & then may even include production time....

OK well the Saxon is Royal quality whatever that means I assumed it was beaver because the booklet it came with stated that but as I have read Stetsons are hard to nail down when it comes to quality. Wow a 6 month wait is wayyyyyy too long jeez well whatever.

While you may be right, I imagine that when he said production time, he probably meant wait time. The time it takes to produce a hat from start to finish is definitely not 8 weeks. When I bought my first Adventurebilt it was five days from the day I ordered it to the day it landed on my doorstep (yes, those were VERY different times). Even now, Art's turn-around times are often 6 weeks, and that's including the line. -M

That's sort-of what I figured, too, though I didn't specifically ask for further explanation.

As far as the wait, most custom hatters have up to a 6-month wait, but since I can't say whether the 8 week production time included the wait, you could always contact Parker at Falcon Park directly via email from the site. It never hurts to look into and you may find that 8 weeks from today will be your wait to receive a beautiful creation. Even if the wait were 6-months for one of his hats, the prices he offers also beat out most of the other custom hatters, so if you have a price range that you need to stick to, it could be worth the wait. Personally, if I had the money, I'd get a custom hat from each of the most common custom hatters that we see here; Art Fawcett, Falcon Park, John Penman, Optimo, etc. Each one has their own "twist" that makes the hat distinct; they're all works of art... I'm starting with a Penman, working towards a decision on a Falcon Park, and the next on the list for me is Art Fawcett/VS.

Guys this thread has truly been a huge help I appreciate it all. When I do get the funds I will definitely send Falcon Park and email and see what we can do. It is just frustrating sometimes living where I do because the only way to get hats really is online. So now that I am more versed in these matters I know what I like and don't like and finding a hat that fits into my likes is becoming damn near impossible. So it looks like custom it is. I will keep you guys posted. If I do order one I will let you know all the particulars and if and when I get it the photos will come :)

Parker doesn't do this full time but 8 weeks does seem like a long production cycle. I know he sends off edge binding. It took him quite a while to trim & bind my Fed4, so 8 weeks could be his full hat from blank to finish production time.

No Royal Stetson level hat has beaver in it as that is the base level Stetson available. The booklet will mention "beaver quality" which is different than beaver content. I would think there is a low percentage of beaver fur mixed in with my Sovereign level Road Master but not any of my Royal Stetson level hats. If you get a chance to handle a Pinnacle or Benchly, you'll recognize the difference.

Ok well sorry for my ignorance, so is that rabbit fur I am handling then? If so I like the quality and would have no qualms using that for my custom fit

Indeed, HT24, there will be very little - maybe zero - beaver in the felt for your Royal Stetson hat. That's not a bad thing, some great hats are rabbit or hare felt. Heck look at the Akubras which many of us believe are the best bad weather hats - no beaver fur at all in those.

There is also a big difference in the felt quality of different rabbit fur hats. My Akubra Campdraft had a quite stiff, rather cardboard feel when it arrived, although it has softened up with use. On the other hand, my rabbit felt Garrison hat is as soft and nice to the touch as most of my beaver hats.

Also, when looking at the wait time from the custom hatters, remember these are not companies with production people making things - it is one guy and it is often not even his full-time job. If anything happens to make the hatter stop making hats for a period of time, there isn't anyone else waiting to step in and keep production going - everything is stopped. You can see why the delivery times they quote are often extended.

Personally, I think waiting to get a customized product from a real craftsman is well worthwhile - having a time lag between paying the deposit and then the rest of the payment helps with cash flow in many cases as well. How often do we get the chance to actually talk to the person that is making something really cool just for us and be able to interact with them on a forum.

I hope you get to purchase one of these customs in the near future - it is a fun experience!

Hi, don't feel really bad about the whole X count beaver thing. The fact that you don't understand that and you think there's beaver fur in your Stetson, makes Stetson VERY VERY Happy. The next sight is a good one to check out for the BASICS of x count etc.

Re-read TonyB's post to this thread a page or so back. Tony is a custom hatter (I have one on order). He explains a lot about how a hat feels. Both my Beaver Brand and an Akubra (probably) have 100% bunny fur in them. The Beaver brand PROBABLY feels smoother because they take more time in pouncing it (sanding it). I can't say for sure because I don't own an Akubra. I have one of Mike Moore's (Buckaroo) hats and one of Roy Jackson's (Jaxonbilt). The Jaxonbilt is a 50/50 bunny/ beaver or 20x. It feels the same as the 100% Bunny one from Mike Moore, it seems to weigh the same, but the felt is thinner. I don't yet own a 100% beaver hat.

Check Mike Moore's site and watch the video showing how hats are made. There's also some of those on the above site and on Stetson's website.
