There is also a much more simplified 'version' of cursive that they teach, when they bother to teach it...."cursive with no tears" or something silly like that.

Its ugly.....

Where is this being taught? I have a high schooler and a 4th grader and they have to write cursive in school. Papers done at home are on computer but everything else is hand written in cursive.

So let's see it! Shall we post photos or scans of our writing?

Only rule is that it has to be pre-written...not written out specifically to post!

Well, I'd be ashamed to post my writing nowadays -- after thirty years of typing, I fear I can't do much but sign my name, and even that tends to be pretty sloppy.

But when I was nine, I wrote very precisely -- testament to my strict grammar-school teachers!

Left-handedness isn't "lucky". It's "sinister". :D
Yep, sinister. That is how they referred to me as a child. ;)
I did not think MissNeecerie's handwriting was left handed. It looks nothing like the cuneiform-like scratchings I use for script. :)

I can typically read lefty writing alright. My dad was so accursed at birth and remains so today, despite the efforts of the nuns to fix his problem.

Nope. I am very much right handed. Although left handedness runs in my family, I did not end up lucky enough myself.

I see. You have a somewhat pronounced backward slant to your handwriting that a left hander might have.
So now I will surmise, according to the science of handwriting analysis, that you are not a demonstrative person for the most part, and you are a good poker player. :)

I know what your dad went through Carebear. I went to a Catholic school from kindergarted till 5th grade. I rember the cursive unit, how can I forget? I still have some marks on my hands. I still write lefty and my print isn't that bad, but my cursive is harder to read. I print my notes and stuff for information.

Not a catholic only problem!

My dad (from the solidly anti-papist north of Scotland) basically cannot write anything legibly. The schoolmaster attempted to make him write with his right by making his left hand so sore from rulers across the knuckles that he couldn't use it. This went on for years.

Now he still writes lefty, but as i say it's completely illegible.

The fact that my grandfather was ambidextrous only went further to convince the teachers that my dad was simply being "difficult".

The teaching I recieved in cursive was awful, and I've never been asked to write in cursive with the exception of my signature since fourth grade. from fith grade and on, all my teachers have encouraged printing or typing.

In second grade I was introduced to the Palmer method. I fought it vehemently. Why did they teach me to print and then tell me I could not do it anymore? I rebelled and refused to do it. Many detentions and whuppins' later I learned to write (Catholic school, you know). I entered a drafting program in high school and what do I have to do? Print! Perfectly! Today my writing is a mix of printed and cursive letters.

What I find even worse than the deterioration of penmanship is the inability of people to compose letters. E-mail and chat is destroying the written language. Most e-mails I receive are sentence fragments rife with misspellings and garbled thoughts. Can't anybody format a proper letter anymore?

I'm left-handed. The only gripe I have about being such is having my watch stem on the wrong side(I wear it on the right wrist).

Maybe you should take a look at the correspondence thread: http://thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=9632&highlight=penpal
