"Rule 5.09(g) states - A pitched ball lodges in the umpire's or catcher's mask or paraphernalia, and remains out of play, runners advance one base. If a pitched ball lodges in the umpire's or catcher's mask or paraphernalia, and remains out of play, on the third strike or fourth ball, then the batter is entitled to first base and all runners advance one base. If the count on the batter is less than three balls, runners advance one base." The above play is a little more complicated, was it a foul tip?

Rule 5.09 (a) (2): "Legally caught" means in the catcher's glove before the ball hits the ground. It is not legal if the ball lodges in his clothing or paraphernalia"

Also, a catcher can legally catch a foul tip against his body, provided the ball hit his mitt before anything else. In this case, it's simply a foul ball the moment it touched anything other than the catcher's mitt.

It used to happen, not often, but often enough in the days when catchers wore steel-wire masks instead of the modern bar type. It's more common for the ball to bounce off the mitt and somehow end up under the catcher's chest protector. Catchers working with knuckleball or spitball pitchers were especially susceptible to these sorts of things due to the unpredictable nature of these pitches.

The problem with baseball is, even if you're a first string second base man, you still spend way to much time on the bench!
