Thanks again for the useful informations, fellas.
Michael, I really like the type of leather used for the vamps of your recent Paul Bond's. Was that waxed or oiled suede? What is that extra piece of leather over the heel?
Paolo

They're Chocolate Brown French Waxed Calf , and the Heel Counter has Shark to keep the wear down incase you wear Spurs and a nice Spur Ridge at the Top of the Heel . But both will keep the Heel Counter in good shape and from getting scuffed up . If you go to Gallery I think , and look under Working Boots , they'll pop up . I got a #3 Heel , they're 16" Tops in Tan Calf , D Toe standard . www.paulbondboots.com

I was able to see today Paul Bond's site, as I couldn't access it as of yesterday, for whatever reason. Their design-your-own-boot section is very interesting.
By the way, I just learned about wood pegged soles and watched a youtube video about it. While I think the making process is really cool, do you fellas think it is an "essential" feature on a boot?
What about a steel shank? Does that make a difference?

I feel that pegged soles are essential for several reasons: First, it's classic design and look in the way the pegs help wrap the sole around the shank and helps create the classic lines of the cowboy boot and aids in arch support. Second, wood pegs react very similarly to leather in that they expand and shrink relative to heat and moisture conditions. Some makers use a combination of brass and wood pegs, even Bond has done this though I don't know if they continue the practice.

The steel shank is important because nothing stronger has been found that is practical to use in boot arch supports. There are synthetics used by some but never in a custom boot. Some makers still use a 16 penny nail, hammered out on an anvil to the desired arch shape for use as an arch support. I've read where Tex Robbin, who has been making boots for over 50 years and uses nails, says he has never had an arch support break in any of his boots.

EEEE Feet

Can anyone recommend a source for very wide cowboy boots?
My feet are very wide. I expect I'll have to find someone who
does custom work, though who knows- maybe someone makes them?

Ideally I'd also go for the squared off ones. I'm not looking for
work boots like the Justins or the Redwings - I can get those
no problem. Looking for something a little nicer.

I had a pair made in Spain and the bootmaker said he'd never
seen feet like mine before.

Looking around (Out of my Budget) and found one place the Big Time Stars buy their Stuff (not sure where to post this , so) www.rockmount.com , Papa Jack Weil founded Rockmount Ranch Wear , and was the inventor of the snap buttons . I think its in CO , under "vintage" style shirts , they sell the "Cannibus Cowboy" with a picture of Willie buying one (figures). There's an Aloha Western Shirt , too . But have some cool western shirts , and a lot of Big Names have bought there . There's a Celebrity Gallery . ... I'm sure they sell Boots , too .

Definately a cool place. Lots of history there, but yeah they're pretty proud of their duds. I've got a couple of their shirts I nabbed off the ebay, and got a cool belt from there several years ago. The guy who runs the place now is the grandson of the original owner. A few years back he published a really cool book about the history of the western shirt. LOTS of eye candy in that one.

There's a thread around here somewhere dedicated to vintage western duds.

Glad you like the pair of PB's you bought!

I used to have a pair of Olathe's yrs ago with green tops before they went to the pieced vamp. They were a lighter green, more like a spruce green top then these outsourced Mexican boots have. And they had what TL used to call an R toe. I really liked those boots. I keep thinking that I'd like to have a pair that would be similar to those again.
