Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

I went into an upholstery shop today to look at some fabrics. I was wearing a 50's shirtdress I have that I adore, which I always thought fitted me like a glove and I was even wearing a longline bullet bra. As I was chatting with the sales assistant it turns out that he thought I was expecting. I guess it may be the higher waistline, but it's still a bit depressing.

I had such a funny situation today!
I had to do some grocery shoppings and decided to walk. So when I wanted to cross the street; a girl on a bike passed me, and gave me a véry arrogant look. Then she looked twice, laughing, and then she looked a third time. So I though she ridiculed me, and gave her a "Whut?" look. I tried not to pay any attention to it and forget it, but I was thinking how rude people could be. I just wore a trenchcoat and my hair in victory rolls, dolled up with a lily.

When I was on my way home, the same girl passed me and she stopped me and told me that my hair looked só só beautiful. So I got all red and shy, and she asked me if it was for somethin'special. "No..this is just my daily look" I told her. "Ohh you look so stunning! Really!'

So .. when she was out of sight I outbursted into a laugh, giving myself a big facepalm, thinking how quickly we interpretate things wrong when people are just looking. Well atleast Í have the tends to think of it as something negative! Maybe I should stop that!
I did love the compliment. It was a very funny situation.

I got a couple good ones at work the other night: "Are you an actress?" I said no, why do you ask... The reply: "Well, your hair just looks so lovely and old-fashioned, we thought you might be coming to or going from being in a play." No, this is me most of the time... "Wow! Well, you should be on stage!"

Like hairstyling skills = acting skills....

Someone else told me I looked like "a proper dame." :laugh:

I had on my usual work uniform for all this, oxford shirt, tie, suspenders, high-waisted slacks and black and white wingtips...

Last weekend a hobo said to me 'you are very pretty. You should be a model. Do you know who you look like?' I said, 'no, who?' And he searched his mind for a bit and said 'Betty.....Betty Boop!' *LOL* That made me smile that day! He he.

I recently went to My boyfriends Mothers b-day party, wiggle dress jumper, black fifties turtle neck and a massive black feathered hat. Also with my vintage red fur collored coat and muff. The whole time people where saying I looked like a fifties movie star and I was also told I looked like Maria from "Dr. Zivogo" Made my night for sure. Also a teenage girl I know asked me to be her "stylist" for her Senior prom, because I am the most stylish Gal she knows and wants to look like me for her big night! She is 18 so it really tickled me to have her looking up to me.

Since getting a new job, I've been very lax about the amount of effort I put into my daily look. One of the pitfalls having a job that wants you to wear jeans everyday is that I've developed some bad lazy habits. I set my hair last Sunday and got some fabulous comments from my customers. One of the best being not so much a comment but a flabbergasted "wow... you look.. wow." and "You remind me of an old movie star.. I just don't know who." I suppose it just reminded me that I need to take the time to take care of me again. I think I need to find a way to combine the casual my office requires and the vintage that I love.

I went to see Stormy Weather yesterday and some one called me Miss Horne. It's seriously the best complement ever. I got a free drink because the director if the theatre liked my dress.

Sorry about the quality of the photo, taken on a phone while in the car. I was on my way to Australias biggest swap meet in Ballarat on the weekend. I recieved so many lovely coments about my 'look' and turned some heads. This was a bit of a confidence boost as I am a bigger girl! I won the dress on ebay about 3 weeks ago and was really hoping it would get here from America in time to wear it! It fitted like a glove as I poured my self into a very long OBG and it hugged me in all the right places. I was complimented all day, often by very 'seedy' ;ooking old men but just as often by other women saying how nice it was to see that I had put in so much effort .

Tatum came up from the south, and we had a girl's day here in the Tampa area. We did a tour of Ybor, and stopped into one shop where the girl asked us if we were there for the convention. What convention, we asked. "Oh, the tattoo convention... I thought you two were pin up models!" How sweet was she? We decided it was the best comment we'd gotten all day

Lenore, I am in the same boat. (A boat in Houston, no less.) I typically go for a more 50s look, so being able to wear jeans every day is a blessing. But I agree that it is easy to get lazy. Mondays are the worst for me. I'm ususally coming off a Friday night set and my hair would be prime for something quick and cute, but I loathe Mondays and loathe getting out of bed even more, so I ususally end up with a sad little pony tail and no makeup. (Every Monday I consider cutting my fringe again because of this)

Any tips for getting back into the swing of things on Mondays? Or how to make the most of a casual work dress code?

And Lenore....sometime we need to discuss vintage-inspired hairstyles and this STUPID humidity we have down here. I set my hair twice last week and within an hour, it was flat pancakes again.
