George Francis Frazier, Jr., in "The Art of Wearing Clothes" (published in 'Esquire' magazine, September 1960), wrote "Although Grant, who is fifty-six, favors such abominations as large tie knots and claims to have originated the square-style breast-pocket handkerchief, he is so extraordinarily attractive that he looks good in practically anything. He insists upon tight armholes in his suit jackets, finds the most comfortable (and functional) of all underwear to be women's nylon panties." Other best-dressed American men cited in the article were Miles Davis, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Clark Gable and Walter Pidgeon.

The thing about Grant was that he crafted himself into who he wanted to be. He came from a lower class English background with a sordid parenthood and pushed himself to a point where royalty wanted to be in his company hoping some of Grant's charm charisma and presence would rub off. I Admire Grant for that reason.

For me... Cooper though sometimes not given as much play, Cooper is the one that really steals the show with his casualness and comfort in his own skin. Even when togged in tails his hair was just a little mussed... Grant is just too crafted to be real, and it's because he's not real, he's Archibald Leech wearing a mask.

I remember seeing a quote where Grant said something along the lines that even he wanted to be Cary Grant (because he really had insecurities and problems, just as everyone does, and the image is pretty idyllic).

By the way, I picked up an issue of Esquire while browsing a newstand yesterday; it has Grant in it as a "Man of Distinction" in part of a broader style-over-the-years layout, which is kind of interesting. The 50s "Men of Distinction" is that famous photograph of all the jazz musicians in Harlem.

I once heard that Cary Grant, when asked about being an actor, responded that he never wanted to be an actor, he wanted to be a Movie Star. If that statement is not accurately attributed to him, it should be.

Grant was a remarkable example of what social psychologists call "behaving as if". It seems to me that he became a consummate actor and did a wonderful job of cultivating a life as a gentleman admired by other men and adored by women.

fully agree on Coop - he was the greatest. IMHO he could fill any role.
(i.e. "Dallas" and the top hat he wore as the dandy)

Was'nt he the actor who when reading and preparing a new role said the first thing he would do would be to find just the right hat for the character he played?
