Those look pretty good, hatflick1. I don't know who makes all their hats but I have a Miller Humphrey that is made by Stetson. It is a very nice hat in Stetson Imperial Felt.

I just love the retailers who sell hats claiming to represent the '20s and '30s, ('20s in this case), and have no idea what they are talking about, since they don't really reflect the styles of the period.

Wish they had a better sense of history.

The perpetual shrinking

Has anyone here ever compiled any sort of guide, whether comprehensive or not, of hat styles by decade? I know well enough that the hat in question isn't in line with the 20s, but I could not in fact tell anyone what would be correct.

There are a couple of places where the major styles of an era are touched on but not as a stand alone thread, I think.

Within any time period there are several styles that are used but for the mid to late 1920's it seems that the iconic hat has a crown that is higher than what we see today, no taper or reverse taper with a medium width brim and a fairly wide ribbon. Someone posted a James Cagney photo that was a perfect example someplace.

Scottyrocks,
I'm a little confused. Isn't 2 3/4" considered a wide brim? Anything much wider than that I figured was a western or Australian style hat, not a fedora.

Yes, that is a wide brim for a fedora. But Im not sure what youre confused about, regarding what I had written. I was commenting on what not-so-critical consumers accept from sellers/marketers as to what is what. IOW, its got a wide brim and straight sides, so its automatically a 30s-style fedora? Never mind that the hat, as a whole, may be lacking in that intangible aspect of 'rightness' that makes you look at it and say, 'Yes, thats what Im talkin' about!'

Got it.
I think I misunderstood the wide brim aspect.
I also concur. Marketers will call anything vintage. And the specific styling differences among the 20's, 30's and 40's become blurred not only by hat makers, but also Hollywood wardrobe departments that seem to indiscriminately plop any fedora on a head regardless of the era depicted.

I have in fact been searching for the very thing for awhile now. Unlike many here I have not gained the expertise concerning style, design and place in time. I would think that an effort to make such a thread would be of great benefit to everyone.

I just posted a new thread asking the Loungers to help build a reference as to the Iconic hats of the different decades / eras with respect to crown height brim width and ribbon treatment. I am hoping the loungers can come up with a fine pictorial and descriptive commentary to help clarify this.
