Broken Stitches

AERO handled this QC issue respectfully - see post #34

On the back side of the sleeve where it attaches about 3" from pit i found 4 broken stitches.

Its pretty minor... but i guess could be problem down road. Im sure they would repair it free of charge if i were to send back... but then i probably would be charged shipping? Should i send back for repair?

This is on the 50s halfbelt i decided to keep... and overall think the jacket is great. :)

This looks like it is the first line of stitches, the one before they fold and top stitch through. Pretty sure you would have to disassemble the jacket completely to fix this.
Personally i would send it back and look for something else.

It never hurts to ask. If this was a sale jacket, in used condition, then probably it just comes with the territory, and if you want it repaired, you'd need to pay for the shipping and so on, but you never know. Aero customer service are fantastic and very reasonable. Once you find out what the deal is, you can always decide to sit on it and wait until it is a more serious issue to do something. That's probably what I woul do.

Wasn't there a post here that stated that the visible stitching more or less also had an equal, redundant interior stitched counterpart, out of sight? That a break on the outside wasn't indicative of catastrophic structual damage?

I dont know. I have not come across that personally. No response from Aero yet. Although i have not worn it outside... i have been doing my in house break in routine... so not sure if Aero would accept return as unworn for full reimbursement... or since there is a flaw they would do full reimbursement. Maybe they fix free of charge... but if i have to pay all shipping... not sure its worth it.

it is not visible so it can be just repaired by adding couple hand stitches from inside just enough to make the surrounding part won't unravel more with hand stitch you can choose not to pierce through both layers, just feel after th need through the first layer then you go back in... I guess.

My Highwayman has broken stitches and has had them for four years- they never unravelled further, there was no structural effect and it continues to be rock solid.

Well i hope this is the case for this jacket as well. The concern i guess is this is in the sleeve/pit area.

I thought a sleeve would definitely come apart- it never has done. A broken stitch at the back of the collar did not 'pull through' and weaken the seam. I think that Aeros are solidly constructed, and no part is held on by just one thread. My HWM has been fallen over in, broken glassed and has top threads broken in a fair few places. No fear.

There are internal stitches, too: the top stitching won't cause the leather to 'spring out'. There may or may not also be stitching work that anchors everything in place at the junctions where parts meet.

Well i hope this is the case for this jacket as well. The concern i guess is this is in the sleeve/pit area.
My missus just past on a tip for consideration. Sewing machine needles for sewing leather are called spearpoint needles, so called because the tip of the needle resembles a tiny spear. This type of entry into the leather prevents the needle hole from fraying, so repairs should be carried out with the same type of needle.

Finding a specialist in leather products can be frustrating, as there's not that many about. But, as my lady pointed out, if you can't find one that is a leatherwear specialist, try looking up classic car renovators. From there, ask who they use to repair or replace leather car seats. The stitching around the seat headrest is not dissimilar to that of those in your picture. Just a thought.

Problem is the shipping, of course. Have you looked into Johnson Leathers?

IMO they should have spotted this before shipping it out.
The fact that they shipped a jacket with defective stitching is a mistake on their part, they should take the shipping hit.
Not impressed.

As far as fixing it, i am far from an expert but have done some leather stitching/repair.
The broken stitch line is the first one they do, before folding over and stitching a second time through both layers.
Because of that it cannot be repaired with a sewing machine since it is hidden in the fold.
The only way you can fix this is either from the outside by hand using a hook needle, or by disassembling the jacket.

Like others have said, i don't thing this is going to fall apart, leather has a tendency to grab and lock thread in, but it is still poor craftsmanship, and i find it disappointing that they don't stand behind their product enough to acknowledge it shouldn't have been sent out like this and making thing right.
