Break Out the Board Games!

This time of year, when the family's gathered round, after we've finished enjoying a couple hours of Masterpiece Theatre followed by brandy and cigars over a few games of chess, we retire to the library where the true mental stimulation begins over a challenging game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos.

I like playing chess with my grandfather. I don't think chess is in the same boat as the other board games though, as it's so much more challenging. He has an antique set with a wooden board and heavy, ornate pieces. Somehow that adds to the experience. Playing chess with modern plastic pieces feels kind of lousy.

My daughter got "Clue" for Christmas from her uncle and we played it on Christmas Day. There's a few new additions to the actual game (new cards, etc.) and the characters have been updated from the original 1949 version.

Dominos, Scrabble and Spades are the go to games around here.

I like Dominoes. I like to play straight but honey likes chicken scratch but knows many of the different ones. I love to find vintage domino boxes. Some of the graphics are very nice.

Chess is probably my favorite board game, but I'm not particularly good at it - still a beginner by the numbers, according to most computer programs' efforts at guessing my official rank.

I like chess. Unlike most other games, it requires full attention and concentration. Although I generally dont like to 'work' when having fun, chess takes me out of everything but the game, something I need to do every so often. I also like playing with large, heavy, ornate pieces that look like buildings in Helms Deep out of Lord of the Rings.

Over the holidays we played a game called Catch Phrase. It comes in an electronic and non-electronic version. Its like Charades but you can talk to describe the phrase as long as you dont say or spell any part of the phrase you are describing. Ten of us played the electronic version, two teams of five. The electronic version has a built in beeping timer that speeds up as time runs down, adding to the mayhem. It was a riot.

I just played Cards Against Humanity for the first time on Halloween. Incredibly fantastic game.

We also played a game called "One Night" which I really enjoyed. It is a lot like Mafia except games last about 10 minutes (we played about 8 "rounds") and there is an iPhone app that can narrate for you. I highly recommend it if you have a group of 8 people interested in trying it out.

I've been introducing people to "Camelot," a strategy game which was Parker Bros. most popular board game until Monopoly came along, and which enjoyed a major vogue in the late twenties. It's another "cross between chess and checkers" with a knights-in-armor theme, and is absorbing enough for grownups while being simple enough for children. It's been out of print since the sixties, but old sets are still very easy to find and very enjoyable to play.

Anyone have a game that gets pulled out when all the family is around this time of year? I love board games, but I am entirely alone in this around the Scotrace Compound. Trivial Pursuit is a favorite, along with the Golden Era warhorse, Monopoly. What do you like to play?

There is a game based around the events tied to Jack the Ripper that I just truly enjoy playing. It has a nice sized board and an interesting form of play. The game is called, "Letters from Whitechapel." It is worth the money. Gather some real intellectuals and enjoy!

I recently played a game entitled, Castles of Mad King Ludwig. In this game you attempt to build castles that best meet the requirement of King Ludwig. The requirements change each game based off three tokens that are randomly selected.
I have played it twice with a group friends. It is very simple and is family friendly.
