All good wishes to my dear friend, admired artist and extraordinary advocate for the Basque Beret: Billy Childish, on his 63rd birthday!

Painter, author, poet, photographer, film maker, singer and guitarist Billy Childish is one of today’s foremost and prolific artists and, following a long tradition in the arts, Billy’s choice of headgear is typically the Basque beret, as evidenced in many of his paintings, woodcut prints and at live performances.

I am proud to have collaborated with Billy in many projects, enriching the world of berets with some beautiful pieces. It all started with the Chyldish Fear Naught' - for Worker, Artist & Artisan.

The Fear Naughts' were followed by the Goat in a Tree series, based on one of my favourite paintings by Billy of tree climbing goats in Morocco.

Our next, and most recent, project together is the CROW series, a collaboration between Billy, the L-13 Light Industrial Workshop, Flamingo Berets and myself. Now among the very best of the best berets to be got! This limited series comes with an autographed reproduction of a crow woodcut by Billy Childish.

A beret every boinero/a should have at least one of! The Flamingo Basque is the standard Basque beret without lining and headband; easily stretchable to the largest head-size, made of the softest Australian merino wool. The manufacturing process involves extended rinsing in the blessed volcanic groundwaters of Mount Aso and brushing for an ultrasoft, pleasant to the touch feel; super comfortable and available in black and 9 colours.

These berets measure 26.5cm in diameter, but as typical for Japanese made berets, they appear to be larger.

Bangin coat, @Mm25 — is that Pendleton or Filson or?
Thank you!
It’s actually a heavy-weight Woolrich shirt, layered over a mid-weight Pendleton shirt. I love wool and look forward to the cold so I can get it out and wear it.

Fern,
You need to wear your self-sewn patch boina and post sometime. I don’t think we have seen it since you made it.

Dan,
What is your favorite boina?
Not by brand or quality, but which individual hat is special for whatever reason. With your exposure to so many it would be interesting to hear which and why.
Ha! That is a good question and not so easy to answer...
My instant response would be to say an Auloronesa Universel, more specifically a Merino d'Arles or Pacifique, but there are other berets that give me immense pleasure, despite these not being of the same high quality or showing the same craftsmanship.

First comes to mind is the Czech Tartan 11.5" or "Service Star"; I dare say the most undervalued beret that I know. In many ways, these berets are the opposite of aforementioned Auloronesas (no cabillou, leather rimmed band), but I love the feel and comfort of these berets (and they are cheap too!). It's my typical go-to beret when walking the dog in the hills.
What always puzzles me, is how popular these berets are in Central Europe (not un-similar to the Polish Warszawski's), but not popular in the "West". These days I often see one in the news when following what happens in Ukraine.
I wear mine usually with the leather band turned inward, giving it a Basque look.

Another beret that I really love is the Flamingo Chobo400 Exclusive Chasseurs, for me in 'Alpin Navy'. Such a great winter beret, warm and comfortable, super soft to the touch.

I could continue listing favourites, but then, it's missing the point of "favourites" I guess... Last one then, is the Super Lujo 31cm in navy. I have had this beret for I don't know how many years and many great memories associated with it. It shows it's immense quality by still being a perfect fit, holding it's shape after been worn for so many years, in various continents and all climates. Despite my love for Auloronesas, I personally put them on the same level as a Super Lujo.

Alas, the longer I think about your question, the more berets come up, all with their own stories and memories. I am lucky to have a great selection to choose from;)!

That’s a great winter style. Double layered felted wool shirts. Gonna try that one.
