Another beard and beret painting this one by Rembrant van Rijn, a self portrait at the Musee Granet in Aix-en-Provence.

It took me a couple of days of adjusting, but now I'm here, back in office, behind my PC, after spending 2.5 weeks in my native Netherlands and surrounding countries.
A great trip in many ways; catching up with family and old friends, hearing and speaking my own language and an escape from the NZ winter.

And apart from all that, some interesting material for The Beret Project. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people I saw wearing a beret. And plenty of suppliers too; there is hope!

Pictured above a gentleman in the metro of Charleroi (Belgium) and my brother (the Beret Spy) in action trying to capture him.

As usual, highlights were the exploration of abandoned places (like this train graveyard in Belgium) and discoveries of berets where you least expect it, such as the street art found in the city of Maastricht (above).

And yes, a keen eye sees berets everywhere...

But, all good things come to an end and others start, like the Chyldish Fear Naught cotton berets that have just been put on SPECIAL!

Hey Philipe,
The Je suis Gas-con beret is very cool!
Finding the Gascon coat of arms on a badge or patch is rare.
So, the embroidered Gascon coat of arms is very nice,
along with the script and music score.
So, what does it mean?

Philipe, I like that beret too.
Also curious about the significance of 'I am Gascon and I wear a beret'
I figured if I kept an eye o_O on this thread that I'd find out.

Oooh those M.B. berets look so very nice.:)

So, what does it mean?
this is about a famous song in France about beret…

An old label has been reintroduced at South Pacific Berets, one of a series on preview here at The Fedora Lounge (see post 2 April this year).

I chose the Rafale label as the latest in a series of old, 1950's, beret labels to be reinstated in high quality modern berets because of it's once high popularity for being water resistant and storm proof. It's all in the name of course: Rafale = "gust of wind" and these berets fit the description perfectly!

The Rafale comes in three diameters: 28, 30 and 32cm at a temporary introduction price of $42.50 only!

Although freezing cold here in Wellington at present, the weather pages in my Dutch newspaper and the increasing sales of cotton berets tell me that life is much better, or at least warmer, in the northern hemisphere of this planet. Cotton is the way to go then!

One can easily be forgiven thinking that cotton Basque berets have always been around, but it is only two decades ago that one would have really struggled to find a decent quality cotton beret.

Now there is an enormous variety in cotton berets, but not all qualify as a true Basque beret. Firmness, weight, breathability, shape steadiness and general comfort are all equally important in making a "true Basque".
South Pacific Berets works with only four traditional and artisan Basque beret manufacturers who have also specialized in working with cotton.

First and foremost: Bonigor and Arandú from Argentina, offering a large range of cotton berets in diameters varying between 28 and 35cm, including the aboriginal Guarda Pampa ("People of the Earth" models, presently on SPECIAL).

France’s oldest beret manufacturer Laulhère and young manufacturer Le Béret Français have both taken a more contemporary look at the cotton beret; Laulhère leading in high fashion and Le Béret Français in the development of super-light, easy to wear and eco-friendly berets of recycled cotton and other materials.

And at South Pacific Berets we developed our very own models; under the Aotearoa label and in collaboration with British artist (and boinero) Billy Childish the cotton Fear’ Naughts (see Bouwerij-Jongen's photo's above).
