The Boinas Exposición Basicá are Boinas Elósegui's most economical berets, but still made with the same craftsmanship and eye for detail as any other Elósegui beret; 100% Australian merino wool, satin lined, fitted with the woven Basicá label and available in two diameters: 250 and 290mm.

The Boinas Exposición Clásica are a remake of the original Spanish berets from the 1930's: well sized plateaus in black, khaki and brown; soft, shapeable merino wool berets in easy to wear one-size models, fitted with the original vintage Boinas Elósegui label. The berets will shape slowly over time and the diameter will eventually decrease by 10-18mm.

The Boina Clásica in black measures 285mm in diameter; the khaki and chocolate-brown models 315mm (these berets are custom made for South Pacific Berets and not available anywhere else).

Greetings to all you beret connoisseurs! Does anyone know the approximate age of my two recent beret finds? On the labels it says UCA-VRSAC, Made in Yugoslavia.

These berets are between 40 and 50 years old, made by UČA in Vršac, then in Yugoslavia and present day Serbia. These labels followed the original Zrenjanin labels (like the "Super" and "Montgomeri").

The factory is named Uča after Žarko Zrenjanin, aka "Uča". Uča was the friendly nickname for the teacher Zarko Zrenjanin who became a famous partisan during the war and who, to this day, is honoured in many ways; a beret factory is one, the city of Zrenjanin is another.
VRSAC%20Vojvodina%20Serbia%20-%20U%C4%8CA%20INTERNACIONAL.jpg.opt203x213o0,0s203x213.jpg

The factory was originally founded in the Serbian city of Vršac in 1924 and has made berets from it's very beginning. The Basque beret became especially popular in Bosnia and the Sandzjak region in Marshall Titio's communist Yugoslavia; it proved to be a very acceptable headgear for Muslims who wanted to keep their heads covered, but not go against the political tide of the time.
These days UČA specializes in the production of military berets. These were of such exceptional quality that even NATO member countries like the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom chose UČA berets for their armed forces. Local companies in the respective countries would sew in a lining and label, that way able to legally state the berets were made in that country.

Until the economic sanctions against Serbia, yearly beret sales to foreign buyers ranged between 300 - 400 thousand pieces. UČA privatised in 2005 and changed it's name to UČA International. The complete production is done in-house by UČA International; knitting, linking, fulling, dyeing, shaping and confectioning under supervision of the CIS Textile Institute of Belgrade.

At South Pacific Berets we stock two models, both in a light density wool, perfectly suited for summer and warmer climates: the Standard Basque Beret without headband, lined, but without cabillou (the little wick at the centre of the beret) and the Basque Beret with a vinyl rimmed (sized) headband and fitted with lining and two air-vents and cabillou.
Berets at a very low price offering exceptional value for money!

Thank you Daan for answering my question, and I really appreciate your in-depth presentation of the brand. I guess it's true what others are saying on this forum: you truly are a walking encyclopedia of berets.

News from the South Pacific:
after a long absence, the genuine heavy felted merino wool chechias from Tunisia, in Bordeaux, blue, black and grey!
upload_2017-2-10_9-43-11.png
upload_2017-2-10_9-43-24.png

The chechia is the national hat of Tunisia and a close cousin of the beret. In Tunisia, eastern Libya and the region of Benghazi (where it is called "chenna") the chechia is a vermilion (red) hat, while in the rest of Libya it is black. In parts of Tunisia and Morocco, the chechia is worn in white or grey. The Benghazi model has, similar to the Basque beret, a tassel at the center of the hat, while the Tunisien model has none.

A hat that is interestingly adopted by Jews, Muslims and Christians in it's homeland - not a small feat!

Completely new are the Catalan made bragatines.

The bragatina is the fusion of a traditional Catalan barretina and a scarf; the perfect accompaniment for cyclists and bikers, worn as an (under the helm) head covering, warm band around the neck or as a true barretina!

An ingenious product of contemporary Catalan design.
92% soft brush cotton and 8% elasthan; warm, extremely comfortable and the perfect gift in a pretty gift box.

I'd guess that Daan will know.
I'm hoping Daan will know, but I figured there was a chance that someone else might have one in their collections. It performed flawlessly on the bike ride today. It has a turn up leather sweat that is sized perfectly. Not restrictive at all, but tight enough to keep the beret firmly on the head while I was whizzing downhill.

Thanks,
Michael
