I would prefer braces. I do wear both, only because some of my trousers don't have buttons for them, and one of the pairs that does has them placed too low (and the tops roll over, looking really untidy).
IMHO, certain trousers, depending on the cut, don't look right cinched with a belt.
There is a fella here at work who wears the elastic clip-on types. One day in the lift one of the ends snapped off and nearly took out his eye. Not only do the clip on ones look naff, they're dangerous as well!
I find that often me trousers slip if I'm wearing a belt. I hate running down the stairs in the tube and have them slip and end up around my lower waist. Then I have to hike 'em up, my shirt comes out all blousey... whinge whinge whinge...
